Newsletter: 8/15/05 -- Bizarre Plane Crash in Greece
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Most of the bodies recovered from the Cypriot plane that crashed into a mountain near Athens with 121 people on board were "frozen solid," a Greek Defense Ministry source said on Monday. Early indications suggest the 115 passengers and six crew were dead or unconscious when the Helios Airways Boeing 737 plunged to earth on Sunday. There were no survivors. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8944885/

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

Defiant and tearful Jewish settlers locked their communities' gates and formed human chains to block troops from delivering eviction notices Monday, as Israel began its historic pullout from the Gaza Strip after 38 years of occupation. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8931552/

A judge raised the possibility that four fraternity members could be charged with torture in the death of a 21-year-old pledge, comparing the alleged hazing death to the torture of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/13/national/main777036.shtml

Wild chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park are mostly left-handed. Most chimps in captivity show a preference for using their right hands; it appears that is merely the effect of being raised by mostly right-handed humans. And that gives us an excuse to revisit Countdown's favorite monkeys.

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
Yohann and Olivier Roussel's performance built to a cacophony of oinks and grunts, unleashing an explosion of applause. But it was only after lengthy jury deliberations that their hopes were confirmed - the father-and-son team were France's official Pig-Squealing Champions for 2005. The judges had been impressed by their vocal imitations of pigs in all of the required categories, from noisy farmyard birth to the inevitable - mating.

Proving once again that every conceivable pastime ultimately finds a contest, and a winner.
