Hey, JT Alpaugh! This should be good.

Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

To the estimated 10,000 residents still believed to be holed up in this ruined city, the mayor had a blunt new warning: Get out now - or risk being taken out by force. The order came as a state lawmaker alleged that staff at a nursing home abandoned 30 patients who died in the New Orleans flooding. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9156612/

J.T. Alpaugh, the chopper pilot who has been giving us the amazing tours of the region will join us live to tell us his thoughts on what he's seen in the past week.

The government's disaster chief waited until hours after Hurricane Katrina had already struck the Gulf Coast before asking his boss to dispatch 1,000 Homeland Security workers to support rescuers in the region - and gave them two days to arrive, according to internal documents. Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sought the approval from Homeland Security Secretary Mike Chertoff roughly five hours after Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29. Brown said that among duties of these employees was to "convey a positive image" about the government's response for victims. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9233396/

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
A local affiliate of the Fox television network has rejected a campaign advertisement for a Democratic politician that lampoons President Bush by superimposing his head on a naked torso. The ad, produced by Brian Ellner, an openly gay candidate for Manhattan borough president, opens with a close-up of Bush's face and zooms out to show the torso from the hips up, with a voice-over saying, "New Yorkers know the emperor has no clothes."

More:
The Bush White House is known for its ability to remain in control of its message and image, sliding out of crises with barely a scratch. Not this time. Despite day after day of appearances by President Bush aimed at undoing the political damage from a poor response to Hurricane Katrina, the White House has not been able to regain its footing, already shaken by the war in Iraq and its death toll exceeding 1,880. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9232927/

Hurricane Katrina will reduce employment by 400,000 people in coming months while trimming economic growth by as much as a full percentage point in the second half of this year, according to a Congressional Budget Office assessment obtained by The Associated Press. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9239167/

Newsweek Commentary President Bush, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff and a host of federal officials deserve much of the intense criticism they've been under for failing to leap into action when Hurricane Katrina's destruction brought on human misery and lawlessness, especially in New Orleans. But the finger-pointing ignores a massive local failure. Yes, FEMA Director Michael Brown moved painfully slowly. But the flooding that has nearly wiped New Orleans off the map was rooted in years of infrastructure neglect-and now state and local officials also need to be held accountable. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9232666/site/newsweek/

U.S. forces on Wednesday freed American contractor Roy Hallums, who was taken hostage last November, after a tip from a captured Iraqi, the U.S. military announced. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9173345/

In a devastating assessment of the U.N. oil-for-food program in Iraq, investigators strongly criticized Secretary-General Kofi Annan, his deputy and the Security Council for allowing Saddam Hussein to bilk some $10.2 billion from the giant humanitarian operation. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9227220/

In a historic cathedral, President Bush and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor are leading final tributes to William H. Rehnquist, the long-serving chief justice of the United States who charted the court's path toward conservatism. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9209570/

Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, said on Wednesday it is reducing capacity at its Cincinnati hub by 26 percent while boosting international service and making other changes in an effort to become more efficient. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9240238/

Gay rights supporters cheered loudly from the gallery as California lawmakers became the first in the country to approve a bill allowing same-sex marriages. But their celebration may be short-lived. The legislation could be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has expressed an acceptance of gay marriages but said it's an issue that should be decided by voters or the courts. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9234556/

Lance Armstrong plans to train with his team this winter, increasing speculation he will end his retirement and attempt an eighth straight Tour de France win. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9228165/

1. hey, interesting that Newsweek seems eager to blame state and local
officials for issuing bonds and is willing to offer up the incompetent head of FEMA but fails to even whisper the name of the individual who appointed the head of FEMA or the Congress who voted for pork instead of levees. I guess there's not as much blame to go around as they thought.
