Katie Couric's House of Pancakes
Well, I saw the mammography. No boobie shots, unless you count the x-ray film. What I want to know is, how come she got instant results? I've always had to wait a couple of days for the radiologist to get around to looking at them.

BTW: the substitute GMA host is our own David :loveya: Gregory.

1. ???
The radiologist always does a "quick" read while I'm turning into an ice cube in that little disposable top. Not that the results are truly "official", but at least I know I won't get a letter/call in a week telling me I need to come back for a spot compression and an ultrasound; I can get them that day if they're necessary. Maybe it varies from one facility to another?

2. She must have had celebrity treatment.
She sat around waiting, then went in the room with the radiologist as her m. was read. They also gave her a sonogram (were they just showing off?); but at the end, they told her all is well, see ya next year.

TV. :eyes: Definately NOT reality.

part eclipsed time because it's being show on TV. She might have needed the sonogram if the mammogram was ambiguous; I've had one before. When I had a questionable mammogram, I had to go back a week later and got the spot compression and the ultrasound on the same day. Now, with the scar tissue (benign biopsy, but got MRSA from the biopsy and ended up with two large scars in the affected breast; long story), they read the mammogram while I wait and if I need the ultrasound they can do it right then, on the same day.

So it's TV/celebrity history if she doesn't have a history, but maybe not so far from reality if she does have scar tissue. I'll bet I spend longer waiting to see the radiologist, though. ;-)

on edit: yes, I actually see the radiologist, but it's not like he/she walks me through every flippin' detail of the films. Probably doesn't want to hear what I'd say about the needle biopsy that morphed into an open biopsy that morphed into MRSA...

4. i've never gotten my results the same day
or had the radiologist go over them with me. just a letter a couple of days later saying "all's clear, see ya in 12 months." i get more feedback from humana (:grr:) about what they are paying (nothing or next to it) & what they're excluding...sometimes i wonder if it's worth having medical insurance.....

5. As far as I'm concerned, this is ALL celebrity treatment for TV purposes.
Gosh, I wonder what they would have done if they'd FOUND something.

The story wouldn't have had such a neat happy little ending, would it?

Hey, who's with me on not liking it when mammography technicians wear smocks with pink ribbons printed on them, or pink ribbon pins? I'd just as soon do WITHOUT that kind of reminder of why I am there, thankyouverymuch.

Hey, if you want an eye-opener for the month of October, when everybody and his dog seems to be trying to convince you that all you need to do to fight breast cancer is buy something, here are links to a couple of my favorite articles:

And before you give any money to the Susan G. Komen Foundation this year (if you haven't already), please don't forget that founder Nancy Brinker is a Bush Pioneer:

Reason enough for you to put your money elsewhere.

6. that's why i refuse to wear ribbons
mostly empty gestures....pin a red/blue/purple/pink/yellow pin on your clothes & voila, you don't have to do anything else! but tell someone who wants to pin you "no" & they look at you like you've sprouted horns! :grr:

7. Oh, absolutely.

It's like, "What's wrong with you? Are you FOR the disease?"

No, I'm not FOR the disease at all...and that's why I don't wear the ribbons. To my mind, pink ribbons in October are more like an annual "holiday celebration" of breast cancer than anything else. They remind me that after all these years and all this money raised, we still haven't gotten RID of this disease. And we never will, so long as groups like the Komen Foundation stay in bed with Big Pharma (whose interest lies in CURING the disease, not PREVENTING it) and maintain the goal of "eliminating breast cancer as a life-threatening illness." Why eliminate it as a "life-threatening illness"? Why not just ELIMINATE IT? Are we just waving the white flag and giving up on that? Or is it that we have to keep it around so money can be made in the treatment of it?

Personally, I prefer Breast Cancer Action, whose token color is red and whose motto is "Cancer Sucks." And which isn't associated with Big Pharma in any way.

Or, if you must wear a pink ribbon, do it this way: buy the limited edition Hard Rock Cafe pin issued in honor of Melissa Etheridge. 100% of the profit from the sales of this pin--ALL of them--go to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, whose stated goal is "to end breast cancer in the next ten years." That's right. END. In TEN YEARS. Not just keep it around so the big pharmaceutical companies can go on making money off it and we can keep "celebrating" it every October for years to come.

Edited to add a link (registration required) to a great NYT article about pink-ribbon marketing and how hard it is to tell what percentage of your money goes to any charity when you buy something linked to cause-related marketing:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/06/fashion/thursdaystyles/06skin.html?8hpib&oref=login

The ultimate point I want to make to people here: if you're a Democrat or you just plain don't like * and his cronies, think twice before giving to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in any way, because when you do, you're helping to support a Bush Pioneer.

15. And don't forget the heart.
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 12:15 PM by CBHagman
I'm not saying mammography and sonogram screening aren't important, but the word about heart health still isn't getting enough press. Women are very much at risk for life-threatening heart disease, even when they're premenopausal, even at relatively young ages, and unfortunately doctors apparently don't always consider the possibility of heart disease. The mother of a friend of mine developed heart disease, came to a doctor with symptoms, and this four-star asshole sent her home WITH A TRANQUILIZER. Fortunately, she eventually got the treatment she needed (long story), but first she went through the business of convincing doctors to take her symptoms seriously.

If a woman doesn't have the obvious chest pains, sometimes doctors don't think to check for heart disease. The symptoms of a heart attack could be nausea, feeling faint, pain in the arms, shortness of breath, and other variations on those themes. When in doubt, have the tests and fight with your insurance company later.

8. It depends on where you go.
When I used to go to the hospital, it took a long time ... and then they'd say, "Oh, no, you need an ultrasound!" Wait another 2 weeks for that and climb the walls meanwhile. But then my doctor recommended a radiologist who had a private practice. She did the mammogram, looked at the pictures while I waited in the room, then came and did the ultrasound. It wasn't celebrity treatment, it's just the way she ran her practice. Fortunately, she accepted my insurance. The only down side: She was ALWAYS late -- even if I had the first appointment of the day. She just got sick and handed the practice over to the hospital, so I guess it'll be more waiting from now on.

9. it may depend on how your referring physician writes the orders.
Because I've done the climb-the-walls-and-come-back-in-a-week route and the we'll-interpret-your-mammogram-while-you-wait-and-do-an-ultrasound-today-if-necessary route at the same hospital. The difference? The second time around, I had two large scars and my referring physician (same doctor, both times) expected they'd need to do followup, so she wrote the orders in such a way that radiology read the film while I waited. The irony? I haven't needed an ultrasound since I got my "beauty marks".

10. My first thought after seeing the promo for this:
Go away Katie, do you have to film every test you have? How about your pap smear, gonna film that?

Apparently got such good ratings they decided to do her mammography next. Maybe she'll have boob implants and edify us with that.:puke:
