Well...has anyone wished YOU a Merry Christmas in the past two weeks????

C'mere. I will.

Photo would've been here sooner, but I was, er, detained.

I better got check. I thought it was on at 9 and 10 tonight.

On edit: I was right -- it doesn't come on until 9 ET. So I can stay.

28. I was wrong.

You know what really irks me? The local NBC affilliate is showing an hour-long Pat Robertson show called "Miracles." I thought that was some kind of faux introduction to the show! :grr:

I just re-set the VCR, and I'm here. :)

I kept wondering, "where's the witty part where the priest turns off the TV and calls him an asshole?"

It took me 5 minutes to realize that it was real. :scared:

And even here, "The Vicar of Dibley" didn't last very long on the local PBS affilliate. :(

61. It totally sucks when that happens. Glad to have you here for the Friday
night festivities.

I'm well too, yesterday had a wicked dust from the demolition headache. It seems my poor old house needed a lot more emergency work than expected, but now it is being built back up again. We now have a floor and a ceiling back in the kitchen. That's a relief. For awhile it looked like a very shabby nightclub (soaring ceiling), we almost hung one of those disco balls.

Oh he's so cute, he was going to do something different and it didn't arrive. That look and comments to the guys off camera was adorable.

He's so unpompous and un-overly impressed with his on air personality.

Indeed, we do.

Being RC, I take the 12 Days of Christmas seriously, and I was pleased that this year we have, as it were, two extra days, because we don't observe Epiphany until this coming Sunday. I'm still playing Christmas music.

Though I found out I was good at dreydl last Sunday. ;-) You should have seen that stack of gelt.

Hey, CB. Down here, the Cuban and Latin communities celebrate Three Kings Day seriously. I'll have to check, but there may have been a parade or too. Lots of people leave their lights up until Jan. 6th. It's still Christmas here too.

128. Of course, the whole Three Kings bit is the stuff of legend.
The Bible mentions wise men coming from the East, but not their number, never says they were kings, and never mentions any names or origins.

Nor does it say they showed up in Bethehem at the manger. More like, possibly, at Jesus's house when he was about 2.

(I love busting popular Christmas myths, sorry. It's the smartypants Olbermann in me.)

with questions like that, any wonder i got un-invited to sunday school? O8)

178. I'll have to re-read Matthew and Luke, but it's not clear to me that
Herod's men started searching for Jesus on day 1. I thought the pursuit began after the wise men visited Herod. Wasn't the slaughter of the innocents supposedly directed towards all male infants under the age of 2? And none of this was in the winter, anyway. Shepherds wouldn't have been out in the fields at this time of year unless the climate in the Middle East has radically changed in two thousand years.

184. I believe you have it right, gk.
Which is why it seems entirely possible that the wise men didn't get to Jesus until he was about 2. They were looking for him, and Herod thought they were going to help find him so he could be killed. That was not part of their plan, however.

It still gives me a laugh sometimes to think that when I was a kid, they actually used to sell cheap plastic Nativities with silver glitter snow on the roof. Did they really think that we would believe that even if it WAS winter, we'd be thinking it snowed in the Middle East?

134. Oh, it was the chocolate kind.
Of course I left it for my friends' kids, who richly deserved it. Besides, I already have a cache of fair-trade chocolate and German chocolate-covered marzipan (Christmas presents) to see me through until Mardi Gras.

You've got to love community festivals of the spiritual/ethnic variety. I still regret never going on a paranda, which, if I recall correctly, combines Christmas caroling with a mobile party and generally disturbing the peace.

*sigh*...there's just nothing I love better in the world at Christmastime.

I got a bar for Christmas (well, technically, Danish, not German) but left it at a sister's house. Still need to get it back!

The only possible drawback I can see to eating marzipan is not being able to kiss Keith afterward. He informed us on the radio that he's allergic to almonds.

Frankly, I'm surprised that possibility did not occur to Keith. It's like he wanted to believe they meant a toilet so badly that alternatives just did not present themselves in his mind.

Unfortunately, this may prove yet another excuse for his enemies to ridicule him. "Sheesh, Keith, haven't you ever heard of an ANTIQUE COMMODE?"

107. That's reminds me of
the time right after 9/11 when Ashcroft was on Larry King and Mr. Bunny and I were watching for some reason. Ashcroft was making a point about how patriotic and unified all Americans were in reaction to the tragedy (this was of course well before his boss screwed all that up) and he mentioned all the American flags he saw as a sign of how together we all were. He said he was in NYC and saw American flags everywhere, on office buildings and in cabs, he even talked about the man he saw living in a cardboard box who was waving a flag and how patriotic it all was. That was all he noticed about that, how patriotic the man was. HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE WAS LIVING IN A CARDBOARD BOX , did anything seem wrong with that to you Mr. Ashcroft.

Larry didn't miss a beat of course or point out the absurdity of it. Mr. Bunny and I just looked at each other, did you hear what I just heard??

Oh, I loved Lou Rawls, what a great voice he had. I loved 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine' and 'Tobacco Road.'

The other sad news, in case you haven't heard, from the musical world is that Barry Cowsill of the Cowsills was finally found dead, after having been missing ever since Katrina. Anyone else remember the Cowsills?

The Cowsills had hit records ("Hair," "The Rain, the Park and Other Things") and inspired the creation of the Partridge Family for TV. As you can see from the above, they also did milk ads. I vaguely remember those.

He had just moved to the NO area, too. Sad.

I thought for sure NBC would get some complaints about it. There was a 15-year-old girl who had been raped at a party and got pregnant. Her parents said she had to have the baby -- it didn't matter how she got pregnant, it was wrong to kill the baby. Luca basically showed her how to have a miscarriage. He inserted a lamium (sp?) that would expand and cause the baby to fall out. I said, uh oh, they're going to hear from the fundies for that.

143. "A Natural Man"
You know, there was a time when, if someone told you to
do somethin', you did it. Bam! Right on! No questions asked.
It was "Yes, sir" and "Yes, ma'am." You never said no. You know? Huh.
But, you know, things are changing nowadays. It's a new day,
babies. Folks want to take their own lives into their hands and
make their own choices. No longer do they wanna go along with
the program 'cause everybody say it's right. You know what I mean?
Let me tell ya what I'm talkin' about, ya see, 'cause...

I don't want no gold watch for workin' fifty years from nine till five
A-while the boss is guzzling champagne and I'm beltin' beer in some dive

'Cause I want to be happy and free
Livin' and loving for me
I want to be happy and free
Livin' and lovin' for me
Like a natural man (like a natural man)
A natural man (like a natural man)

Well now, I refuse to listen to people's thinkin' that I live too high
I'm gonna taste it now before my one life streaks on by

'Cause I want to be happy and free
Livin' and lovin' for me
I want to be happy and free
Livin' and lovin' for me
Just like a natural man (like a natural man)
I said a natural man (just like a natural man)

Well now, I tried to do what others say that I should do
They say that I should fit in, fool 'em, fake it, well
Those kinda dues just make me crazy and blue
Man, I just can't take it

So when ya see me walkin', won't ya notice that proud look in my eyes
My feet are on the ground and my soul is searchin' for the sky

'Cause I want to be happy and free
Livin' and lovin' for me
I want to be happy and free
Livin' and lovin' for me
Just like a natural man (just like a natural man)
A natural man (just like a natural man)
Just like a natural man (just like a natural man)
My feet are on the ground (just like a natural man)
My soul is searchin' for the sky (just like a natural man)
Like a natural man (just like a natural man)
No more "Yes, sir" (just like a natural man)
No more "Yes, mam" (just like a natural man)
Huh, 'cause I'm a natural man (just like a natural man)
I'm a natural man (just like a natural man)

R.I.P. Lou.

I will have to tape the Chinese ice thing part of Oddball over again tonight. I was trying to turn up the sound and accidentally changed the channel instead. 150. I think to some extent some Catholics do it.
You know, sprinkle the house with holy water and have a priest bless it and all that.

But a cleansing? I don't think so. Except with a mop and broom.

What I would have asked had I been Keith was, when the door is propped open to let bad spirits out and good spirits in...well, how do you know which is which? How do you know bad ones are leaving and good ones are coming in? Is there a bouncer at the door who examines them and denies admission to the bad ones and scoots the ones in there out and pushes the good ones in? Do any of the bad ones manage to get in with fake IDs?

I would think there would have to be some kind of control here.

(Keith was in the impish kind of mood on the radio today where he would have asked exactly that kind of question. Tonight, not so much. At least not of her.)

157. it's done here a lot
but i live in a primarily catholic area. when we had 2 attorneys die within a short time of each other (one of them was a good friend of mine), almost every law office had someone contact their local priest to come bless their office. i just ponyed up my share of the donation & kept my mouth shut. no harm, no foul.

Sports? Well, some men might think of her as a sport to be played.

Theater? Only bathos.
