Countdown Newsletter -- 01/19/06: New Bin Laden Message?
He's baaaack...

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Al-Qaida is making preparations to attack the United States again but offering a truce "with fair conditions," the terrorist group's leader, Osama bin Laden, purportedly says in an audiotape aired Thursday by Arab news network Al-Jazeera. The tape's release came days after a U.S. airstrike in Pakistan that was targeting bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, and reportedly killed four leading al-Qaida figures, including possibly al-Zawahri's son-in-law. There was no mention of the attack on the segments that were broadcast. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10924015/

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

The mother of abducted American reporter Jill Carroll appealed for her daughter's release Thursday, hours before her captors' deadline, saying the 28-year-old is a woman of deep conviction who respects the Iraqi people. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10895039/

The official Vatican newspaper published an article this week labeling as "correct" the recent decision by a judge in Pennsylvania that intelligent design should not be taught as a scientific alternative to evolution. "If the model proposed by Darwin is not considered sufficient, one should search for another," Fiorenzo Facchini, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Bologna, wrote in the Jan. 16-17 edition of the paper, L'Osservatore Romano. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/19/science/sciencespecial2/19evolution.html

The moment Antonio Davis dashed up into the stands, everyone was thinking the same thing: another NBA brawl. Yet this was different. Concerned his wife was in trouble, the New York Knicks forward reached her in the seats but remained calm, never took a swing at anybody and willingly walked away when security arrived. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10916711/

Paris Hilton faces a multi-million-dollar suit over comments she may have made privately to her publicist about an incident at a bar - though, allegedly, she made the comments with a view toward having her version of events circulated in gossip columns. http://writ.news.findlaw.com/hilden/20060117.html

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
Police arrested a man accused of faking his death more than 25 years ago to avoid paying child support. Johnny Sterling Martin, 58, had a relative call Family Court in 1979 and report that he died during a bar fight in Alabama, authorities said. That call came a few months after he escaped from a work detail while serving a one-year jail term for failing to pay $4,120 in support for two children. He was captured Tuesday and jailed, and now owes more than $30,000 in child support and faces an escape charge, authorities said. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FAKED_DEATH?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Now THAT brings new meaning to the phrase "deadbeat Dad".

1. Re: the reduction in the number of new unemployment claims
The reason there are fewer new claims is that everyone is out of work already. Duh!

some people aren't eligible anymore, so of course, the numbers go down. the number of unemployment claims does not truly reflect the real unemployment numbers.
