Countdown Newletter -- 01/30/06: Why Hide?
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Republican lawmakers said Sunday that President Bush should publicly disclose White House contacts with Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist who has pleaded guilty to felony charges in an influence-peddling case.
Releasing the records would help eliminate suspicions that Abramoff, who helped raise more than $100,000 for Bush's re-election campaign, had undue influence on the White House, the Republicans said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0601300203jan30,1,4416134.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed

President Bush's State of the Union address on Tuesday night marks the opening of a midterm election year eagerly anticipated by Democrats and fraught with worries for Republicans, whose hopes in November may depend in large part on how successfully Bush can turn around his troubled presidency. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11080779/

ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt were flown to a U.S. military hospital in Germany on Monday, after treatment in Iraq that included surgeons removing shrapnel from Woodruff's head and neck. The two journalists were seriously injured when a roadside bomb exploded Sunday while they stood in the open hatch of an Iraqi military vehicle. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11086342/

A British man whose American wife and daughter were found shot to death in their home has agreed to speak to U.S. officials at the American Embassy in London. http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=123239 The latest on that.

The only time Norah Vincent was ever accused of being too feminine was when people thought she was a man. And when she bound her breasts, wore a pressed blue suit, a fake penis and faux stubble, and went to strip clubs and men's groups to research her book, "Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey Into Manhood and Back," she realized how undeniably female she is. The result is an intimate account of the 18 months Vincent spent as "Ned," penetrating tight circles meant only for men. http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/entertainment/13729521.htm

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
One registered Republican won't be able to vote in the next election unless he appears at a Berks County Elections Board to explain the signature on his registration form. The man is registered as Paul S. Sewell, but his form is signed "God." County Solicitor Alan S. Miller said Sewell claims his "God" signature is merely a legal mark like the "X" used by people who are illiterate. Sewell, 40, said he will be happy to explain. As the owner of a bail enforcement agency, he finds fugitives, he said. "Whenever I go to arrest somebody, they say, 'Oh, God, give me another chance. Oh, God, let me go. I'll turn myself in tomorrow,'" Sewell said. He said he thinks his designated mark is legal. "PennDOT accepted it on my driver's license. I have a credit card with it," he said. "It shouldn't be a problem." http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/V/VOTER_GOD?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Oh, good... grief.

Come on. I think Carey deliberately wrote it that way. HE's the one with the dirty mind...not us!
