(OT rant) I have HAD IT with computers! |

So I needed to upgrade my PDF viewer. No biggie, right? Wrong. It's one of those cascading disasters where the latest release of software means I have to upgrade or acquire and install a dozen other packages just to make the first one work. And the IT "help" who partitioned the drive on this disk made my /usr partition so small it's already 99% full so now I need to shove stuff out to a different part of the drive and do a lot of juggling to make space and fix broken links because things aren't where they're supposed to be. If I ever finish this chapter of Software Hell, I'm going to reformat this damned drive so I can have enough room to do things. Did IT think I wasn't ever going to need new software? :banghead:
Why do I do this for a living?
on edit: I forgot to add that every package comes with some obscure bug that I have to Google around to see if anyone's encountered it before... and that's usually when I find out there's two or three other packages than need to be added/upgraded. :grr:

We're getting ready to upgrade to InDesign CS2 from PageMaker and also upgrade my Illustrator and Photoshop and I'm terrified of how it will go.

and this is a bigger pain in the ass than building a new kernel (which I've done)... at least for that, there are online step-by-step kernels-for-dummies guides. This, I only find out I need to upgrade X, Y, Z software -- and in a particular order -- when something goes splat.
