Countdown Newsletter -- 2/27/06: Mardi Gras, 6 Months After Katrina
And, RIP Dennis Weaver...

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Children sat atop ladders yelling for beads and other trinkets Sunday as two of the Carnival season's biggest and glitziest parades rolled through this fun-starved city. By nightfall, the warm, sunny weather had chilled a bit, but that didn't stop the crowds - old, young and of all races - from partying. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which flooded most of the city last summer, people seemed a bit nicer - and less apt to lace their words with profanities - than in previous years, an annual vendor said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11571347/

Politics: The Katrina Effect. Has the White House lost its game since Katrina?

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

American journalist Jill Carroll is alive and Iraqi authorities are optimistic about her release, Iraqi officials said Monday. Iraq's interior minister, Bayan Jabr, told ABC News that he believes Carroll will be released, adding that he knows who abducted the 28-year-old journalist last month. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10704039/

Interior Ministry forces captured a top aide to al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi during a raid in western Iraq, state television reported Monday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11491483/

That 8 pm feud makes the news: Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly is such a swell guy he's trying to help out a rival network--and maybe find work for Phil Donahue, while he's at it. Oh, and if he could get MSNBC "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann fired in doing so, well, that would be OK, too. It's tongue in cheek, but some people might take it personally. Not Olbermann. Instead, on Friday's "Countdown," Olbermann and MSNBC staff signed the open letter to NBC Universal Chairman Bob Wright that visitors to BillOReilly.com are asked to endorse. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-0602260017feb26,1,709251.column?coll=chi-entertainmentfront-hed

Princess Diana has been dead for nearly nine years, but new charges are surfacing -- charges that are so alarming the future of the British royal family itself could be in question. The Sunday Times of London reported this weekend an allegation that Henri Paul -- the driver of Diana's car who died in the crash with the princess and her lover, Dodi Al Fayed -- was working as a spy, an operative for the French secret service intelligence agency. Previously, French authorities have reported that an autopsy report indicated Paul was drunk (also possibly on some sort of prescription drug) and speeding at the time of the fatal accident on Aug. 31, 1997. http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainment/cst-ftr-zp27.html

If Ohio State Sen. Robert Hagan's proposal becomes law, Republicans would be barred from adopting. Wednesday night, Hagan wrote a mock proposal to counter one introduced by State Rep. Ron Hood (R-Ashville) aimed at banning gay adoption. Hagan said that "credible research" shows that adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing "emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities." For his part, Rep. Hood's legislation, backed by eight other conservative Republican lawmakers, would prefer 22,000 Ohio children to languish in foster care than be adopted or fostered by gay parents. http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20060224/cm_huffpost/016311;_ylt=A86.I2Q5wQBEGDwAaAj9wxIF;_ylu=X3oDMTBjMHVqMTQ4BHNlYwN5bnN1YmNhdA--

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
McKENZIE, N.D. -- Bernice McDowall says she never thought black cats were unlucky. Now her own black cat, Joey, is her hero. McDowall, 87, said she was taking a nap when Joey woke her up early Friday afternoon and probably saved her life. "He was having a fit, running around the bedroom," she said. Then she saw smoke in the bedroom, got up and saw smoke coming from the basement. She and Joey got out safely. Joey had found a home with the McDowalls after he was dumped off at a nearby mailbox awhile back. On Friday, he "really came in and sent the alarm," Bernice said. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CAT_HERO?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Now that's karma.

"The Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown was accused in Britain's High Court on Monday of taking material for his blockbuster conspiracy thriller from a 1982 book about the Holy Grail. The accusation was made in a breach of copyright lawsuit filed against "The Da Vinci Code" publisher Random House. If the lawsuit succeeds in getting an injunction barring use of the disputed material, the scheduled May 19 release of "The Da Vinci Code" film starring Tom Hanks and Ian McKellan could be threatened. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11589138/

1. gotta love the fundies
True to their pro life mantra: love the fetus, hate the child, they think it's better to let abused/abandoned kids stay in the foster care system (being shuttled around from home to home) or remain in homes where they are being abused/neglected (because of the lack of foster homes) than admit that gay people can make great parents.

2. it really outrages me
as we have gay neighbors who are great parents, yet I know some holier-than-thou types whose kids I consider to be felons-in-training.

Okay, we know he'll want to cover the Replubicans-can't-adopt story (great counterattack, IMO), and I'm betting that Farfrompoopen Road will get mentioned even if it's only a drive-by for top 3 newsmakers. Do you really think he's going to cover the "Da Vinci Code" story, unless he can work in a Monty Python reference?

3. The book referenced to must be
"Holy Blood, Holy Grail," so I say there's a BOLO for Monty Python references tonight. :)

I know a few gay parents who are absolutely wonderful to their kids as well, and have known more than my fair share of "the Bible says I can abuse the crap out of my kids" fundies. :grr:

6. well, it's going to have to be a late BOLO
TCM is running "Sense and Sensibility" tonight and I'm a sucker for that movie. Great casting all around, except for Hugh Grant, whom I always just want to smack the hell out of. Other than him, the other performances are a treat, especially the laconic husband of the garrulous wife. And Alan Rickman would run away with this picture if the rest of the cast weren't so good. He seems capable of telegraphing all sorts of emotion with subtle changes in facial expression.

7. I like him
He completely stole "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" from Kevin Costner.

9. well, since I don't have the highest opinion of Kevin Costner's
acting, I wouldn't say that's such a difficult task. The thing I can't get is that some women are all swoony over Rickman in his role as Severus Snape. Excuse me? Is there such a shortage of moody bastards with greasy hair in real life that you need to go around fantasizing about one? :eyes:

11. I don't get that either
& when I read the first book, I immediately pictured Alan Rickman as Snape.

13. I do love me some Alan Rickman
and I'm a sucker for a Jane Austin/British costume drama. However, it's always better when there's a Firth involved. :)

5. hi. Hope you're having a good day
cause I'm not. I'm home with a sick kid and not feeling much better than she is; just ducking in for giggles between naps (ours) and jello calls (hers).

14. Hey, Pats
Isn't it time for the show yet? I'm falling asleep -- I don't know how I'm going to make it to the end of the Bachelor finale. I don't usually watch it, but when I was in Atlanta I found out the guy used to work for my company, so I started watching. He seems like a great guy.

I forgot all about Bill Maher on Friday, but I taped it at 1 a.m. this morning and just watched it. Not as good as last week, but still good.
