Countdown Newsletter -- 05/04/06: Shut Up, Go Directly to Jail
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown

U.S. Judge Leonie Brinkema sent Zacarias Moussaoui to prison for life Thursday, to "die with a whimper," for his role in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He declared: "God save Osama bin Laden - you will never get him." Brinkema and the unrepentant Moussaoui capped the two-month trial with an intense exchange that will mark the defendant's last public words before his incarceration in a maximum security prison in Colorado. Brinkema firmly refused to be interrupted by the 37-year-old defendant as she disputed his claim that his life sentence meant America had lost and he had won. "Mr. Moussaoui, when this proceeding is over, everyone else in this room will leave to see the sun .. hear the birds ... and they can associate with whomever they want," she said.
She went on: "You will spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison. It's absolutely clear who won." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12615601/

The Kremlin on Thursday rejected as "completely incomprehensible" remarks by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney that Russia was backsliding on democracy and using its vast energy supplies to bully its neighbors. Cheney, in remarks that could cause tense moments when Russian President Vladimir Putin hosts his first summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations in July, earlier told Baltic and Black Sea leaders in Vilnius that Moscow should return to the path of democratic reform. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12623085/

A political strategist who left U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris's Senate campaign last month said Harris ignored her staff's recommendation to reject a defense contractor's $10 million appropriation request, now being challenged by a congressional watchdog group. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/04/AR2006050400660.html

As illusionist David Blaine sits in a glass sphere filled with water, spectators pass by at Lincoln Center. Blaine entered the sphere on Monday. He will stay there until May 8 when he will remove his breathing tube and attempt to hold his breath for nine minutes, breaking the world record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds. He will be handcuffed to 150 pounds of chain and try to free himself during the final stunt.

Finally,
YUBA CITY, Calif. -- A taxpayer advocate has complained to Sutter County supervisors that metal detectors at county buildings are so sensitive they are being set off by underwire bras. Sutter County Taxpayers Association member Roberta Fletcher said the male security guard seemed to enjoy waving the handheld metal detector over her chest. "It is, at a minimum, for a woman, embarrassing. And at a maximum, it is sexual harassment to hold your arms outstretched while a male officer waves a wand in front of your breasts," Fletcher told supervisors at their meeting Tuesday. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/METAL_DETECTOR_BRAS?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

You know, when I saw the subject line "Shut Up, Go Directly to Jail", my first thought was that the related story would be about criminal penalties for journalists who publish leaks. :-(
