Countdown Newsletter -- 05/22/06: D.C. Scandals

Tonight on Countdown

The classified status of the identity of former CIA officer Valerie Plame will be a key element in any trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff, according to special counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has said that at trial he plans to show that Libby knew Plame's employment at the CIA was classified and that he lied to the grand jury when he said he had learned from NBC News's Tim Russert that Plame, the wife of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, worked for the agency. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/21/AR2006052101024.html

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer. At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12903856/

The government has the legal authority to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said yesterday. "There are some statutes on the book which, if you read the language carefully, would seem to indicate that that is a possibility," Mr. Gonzales said on the ABC News program "This Week." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/22/washington/22gonzales.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Senator John McCain kept reading his speech as boos and angry hecklers tried to drown him out. His appearance at the New School commencement Friday was met with harsh protest from students who thought his conservative political positions had no place at their liberal university. "The senator does not reflect the views on which this university was founded," said graduate Jean Sara Rohoe. "Not only this, but his invitation was a top-down decision that did not take into account the desires and interests of the student body." The anger was made clear in remarks from Rohoe, who abandoned her original speech to criticize the Republican lawmaker's appearance. Students had petitioned for the university to cancel McCain's speech, but the school's president, former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey, refused to give in. http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=3&aid=59590

Veterinarians announced Sunday night they had successfully fused the shattered right leg of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, offering reason for optimism after a tumultuous 24 hours during which the racehorse went from contending for the Triple Crown to struggling for its life. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/05/22/SPGK8IVS8L1DTL

There was no smile. Fans didn't jump out of the stands chasing him around the bases like Hank Aaron after home run No. 715. There was precious little emotion when Barry Bonds hit his 714th home run Saturday against the Oakland Athletics, tying Babe Ruth. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/giants/2006-05-21-bonds-reaction_x.htm?POE=SPOISVA

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A 10-year-old girl who drove off with her guardian's sport utility vehicle with a toddler and a 5-year-old on board crashed the vehicle into several cars, authorities said. The girl sideswiped several cars during her 15-minute drive Thursday night and reached speeds up to 50 mph, said Ted Roy, spokesman for the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. "She was so little she had to go down and hit the gas and pop her head back up to see where she was going," Roy said. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CHILD_DRIVER?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

1. I hope the NWS is consulting with
Pat Robertson. Didn't he just say recently that God told him the coasts would get lashed by storms?

And who in their right mind lets their 7 year old train for that swim?
