8. Lawrence O'Donnell just said TO's article turned out not to be true.
I'm starting to think the TO article had Rove behind it. Discredit the blogosphere, take the sting out of the actual indictment when it comes, totally set up TO and discredit an easily discreditable journalist. Except it didn't work on the other blogs, only started squabbling on DU.

Is that nasty frog woman listening?

and if they wanted to take out the bloggers, it ain't gonna happen. This was a blip in the real world, if that. If the blogs were looking to get any semblance of credibility from the CM, that's sad, because they weren't ever going to get it anyway. They are the competition.

I didn't get to finish my thoughts in that other thread, but I will after the show. Hi, dahling!

Just that it is starting to fit Rove's MO.
Can't wait until his dirty bag of tricks is taken away from him altogether.
Can't happen soon enough. This time I'd like it to happen BEFORE the election, this November's.

97. I'm starting to think that
O'Donnell is compensated for all of his television work.

I don't smell a Rovian ploy here for a variety of reasons: TO is such a small target, there was extremely little accusatory follow-up from the corporate media, and I expect Rove will be indicted shortly if it hasn't already happened. I can credit the idea of the Killian memo being Rovian because a widely known news anchor and network were targeted and the goal was to spin something in an election year, i.e., significant target + significant jeopardy for Rove's side + a problem that might be "solved" by spinning. That pattern doesn't match the current situation. Although Rove is playing for extremely high stakes, TO is tiny and most of America isn't plugged into the blogosphere and wouldn't give a rip if they (or the entire blogosphere) blew a story. Plus, no amount of spinning or discrediting on Rove's part is going to stop the grand jury. In short, although this ploy poses no discernible risk to Rove, there's really not a significant benefit, either.

As for the Truthout mess, either Jason wanted to get a big scoop, invented the whole thing, and Will and Mark were afraid to disavow Jason's story when they learned of the deception or they actually believe they have part of the elephant in their grasp. I'm leaning toward the latter explanation, mostly because I think Will would denounce Jason if he believed he'd been punked.

100. but Rove does know that the blogosphere is the only information source
Edited on Wed May-24-06 07:14 AM by bunny planet
that he doesn't control yet, with fear, intimidation, and downright dirty tricks. I definitely believe that there is no dirty trick too small or insignificant for Rove, he is after all a petty POS and he also knows that the liberal blogosphere has disseminated news in the past that has been, shall we say, extremely inconvenient for him and his ilk. I think he'd take great pleasure in discrediting the blogs if he could accomplish it. Just a normal day for KKKarl. Not saying that he did, just that he would.

Also, remember, Rove used the rightwing blogs to accomplish his smear of Rather and CBS news. The liberal blogs are a pesky little thorn in his side, I believe he'd love to dismantle them. And he'd do that by continually discrediting them and planting seeds of doubt among people who use them or are just starting to use them. As far as PF and the grand jury still indicting him, of course he can't control that (at least let's hope not) but he can influence how the information gets out there and try and play a 'boy who cried wolf' trick. He'll try anything to alter public perception at this point. Again, not saying it happened this way, just that nothing's too small potatoes for the Pillsbury Roveboy.

101. but if he were out to get the blogs, where's the follow-up fire
from the Wurlitzer? Usually the PR campaigns are pretty blatant, at least to our ears. There has been some slanging of the TO article, mostly in the blogosphere, but nothing like the all-out screeching of talking points that I'd expect if this were part of a concerted attack. It's kind of hard to discredit the blogosphere when most of the American public is probably still unaware of the story.

102. If he has anything to do with it, and I really am not convinced he did,
his position right now would not allow him to be quite as blatant as he usually is, a more subtle dirty trickstering if you will. Yes, most of the American public is not aware of the blogosphere but it is growing. What better way to discredit it then to 'pre-emptively' cause it to look inept and foolish, to keep it from getting anymore traction and following than it is building already. It didn't work this time however, only a few dozen ridiculous threads on DU (mostly frogwoman and OLL starting trouble from what I could see). The rest of the blogs were very professional about the story and the controversy that I could see. They just said no comment until the story is proven or unproven period.

103. it could have been a gambit to see if it would spread throughout
what the Rude Pundit calls Left Blogsylvania but I'm not sure it would have worked even if that had been the idea. Like as not, Joe American would have just thought it was some pissing contest between Old and New Media. It's not like Old Media can brag about their accuracy on stories -- WMD, anyone? -- and Drudge is chock full o' crap. I'd have expected juicier bait than this and a story the average Murkan could understand. A lot of them might think, "indicted then, indicted two weeks later, who cares?" And, as KO pointed out last night, Leopold has been way in front of Old Media and correct in the recent past, so this may be another instance.

51. Great interview.
Loved when KO said 'do you have to be a war veteran or a Senator to take part in the public discourse'
Would have liked it to be pointed out in the lead up that McCain gave a speech at Falwell's Intolerant (Liberty) University prior to the New School. Also that the New School students had been very vocally opposed to McCain giving this speech for weeks before it happened. The gay student union was especially vocal about it as well they should be. McCain probably scores points with his ultra right wing detractors now, he's proven that the 'lefties' hate him now. What a tool his Chief of Staff is.

Not like the "rabid-angry-librulllll" the Reich-wing media will make her out to be.

Sigh.

66. Hi Pats!
:hi: I can't even stand to listen to that story. I'm glad they didn't have to put him down (yet) & I do hope he recovers, but is winning a race worth it to put an animal through that much pain?

And that thread in GD apparently caught a bit of a whiff of the TO festering boil. Whatever.

I'm glad he made it through the surgery, and I heard today that he was checking out the mares standing around. Men. :)

55. I have ALWAYS wondered why they can't fix a horse's leg.
I realize he'll never be able to race again, but, hell, if they can fix dog legs, human ankles, etc., why CAN'T they fix a horse's leg?

82. Lots of reasons.
For one thing, almost all horses stand all the time--even when asleep--and horses put a LOT of weight on their legs.

For another, horses that favor a broken leg tend to put too much stress on the other legs and then injure another one.

For a third, healing a broken horse leg takes a truckload of therapy and time, and it doesn't always work. Sometimes the horse is not cooperative. Sometimes the nature of the break, or the age of the horse or other factors, make healing unlikely. Or maybe the horse could survive, but with an extremely poor quality of life. Thoroughbreds don't like being confined, which is partly why healing is so iffy. You can tell a person he can't run around and he has to stay confined for a time if he wants to live. You can keep a dog lying down and at rest, even if it takes some doing. Not so easy with a horse.

And there are lots of other reasons. The drugs may not have a good effect, too much strain may be put on the horse's vital organs, you name it.

The good news for Barbaro is that his owners have the money and the incentive to give him every chance in the world to recover (he could make good money at stud). Also, apparently, the horse himself has so far been doing everything right. If all goes well, maybe he could make it.
