President Bush said Tuesday that a plan to bolster Iraqi security forces in Baghdad will better address the violence there as he pledged to be a “strong partner” with Iraq’s new democratic government. Bush thanked Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for his courage and perseverance in the face of sectarian violence as the Shiite politician made his first visit to the White House. Recent violence has sapped political support for the more than 3-year-old war in Iraq, in both the United States and Iraq.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14009793/The powerful American Bar Association charged president George Bush with flouting the constitution and undermining the rule of the law by assuming power to disregard selected provisions of bills he signs. An 11-member bipartisan panel of the bar association said in a report that Bush had used the provision of "signing statements" far more than his predecessors, raising constitutional objections to over 800 provisions in more than 100 laws as they infringed on his prerogatives. The panel said these uses of power by the president amounted to "veto" and deprived the Congress of the opportunity to override the veto.

Bush's practice of claiming a right to ignore or not enforce sections of bills that he signs into law. Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said he plans to introduce legislation this week that would give the U.S. Congress the right to bring a lawsuit against Bush's "signing statements."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14020234/As the death toll from a scorching heat wave rose and record demand tested the state’s power supply, energy managers feared they may have to trigger rolling blackouts. The National Weather Service issued another excessive heat warning for Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 112 degrees in the Los Angeles area.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14024095/A Florida congressman says he was caught off guard during a Comedy Central interview. Comedian Stephen Colbert first told Wexler “this is just for kidding,” and then asked Wexler to say something that would be guaranteed to lose the election for him — if he actually had any opposition. He then prodded the Democrat from Delray Beach to complete these sentences — “I enjoy cocaine because..." and ”I enjoy the company of prostitutes for the following reasons..." Wexler replied, “because it's a fun thing to do.” Wexler says he did the show at the prodding of his younger staffers and has no regrets. After all, he says, it was comedy.
That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.
Finally,
An 80-year-old woman pulled a "Crocodile Dundee" when she confronted a burglar, telling him: "You call that a knife - this is a knife." Winifred Whelan, from Liverpool, awoke to find a man standing by her bed with a 10 inch knife, demanding money. She ran downstairs, grabbed a 14 inch carving knife and shouted the line. The two men had also threatened her husband John, 82, and her son Vincent, 53, who has since died in a car accident. Mrs Whelan added: "Luckily Vincent grabbed the knife from me and stopped me from doing anything stupid. "I think he was scared that I would stab the man or that he might attack me." Two men were jailed at Liverpool Crown Court last week in connection with the incident.
