8. Apparently, you didn't read about the guy I met this weekend.
He was a Russian translator in the Army. Loves Wes, hates Bush. Is from Brooklyn... pretty cool to find in red-land. ;)

(And, he came over last night... :) )

I don't recall visiting you last night though.

Ummm... I'd have to guess... He graduated college in 1995 and went into the Army AFTER (he, he did it backwards)... sooo... probably 1996ish, 1997ish.
His last name is the same as a famous Ingrid.

17. We almost all did it backwards
Most of us Russian linguists graduated college, and then did the language training in the Army. The ones who only had high school first were very prone to flunking out completely, or being "recycled" - after a few months being put back in the beginning newbie classes to try again.

I went through a decade ahead of him (thanks for making me feel old - I shouldn't have asked!)

I'm in Whitewater (a university city in Southern WI), at Mom & Dad's.
No Clintons or McDougals around here, as far as I can tell.

So, why not?

And as long as we're talking Jamie Lee Curtis, I pictured her "pole dance" in True Lies (w/the Governator). Damn funny movie. :)

SOLO, if you know what I mean!

I bet Keith isn't too happy about this arrangement either! Don't try this during the live broadcast, or I wouldn't be surprised to see Keith suddenly pause in mid-newscast, frown, get up, walk to the camera, and say, "Excuse me, but it appears to me that SOME of you out there in the audience aren't giving me your full attention. To the KOEB'er known as CC, aka Ferretessa...LISTEN UP! THIS MEANS YOU! The two of you quit canoodling like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and LISTEN TO WHAT I'M SAYING HERE!...Okay. Thank you very much. Now, as I was saying..."

Hey at least hubby doesn't mind Keith being there. Keith would just have to get over hubby being there. I saw the early show and hell even found Keith for the hub on XM radio (which he has and I don't) so he could hear him when he is on the road. And he is slowly trying to spread the word to other truckers. Specially the ones he can't get to listen to AA. It nice ti hear when a Faux listening switches to Keith, something may sift down through the muck in their brains. And as much as I am getting tired of deep throat it has gotten a few more to listen to Keith these last few days.

90. Good point. And if they change their minds about the glory of the blivet**
and his administration, they can pass the word. Ripple effect can work with burly truckers, too. The ones I've known were great people, not at all like the very unfair stereotype.

95. The unfair stereotype
is out there for a reason, they are plenty of those jerks too. The other side of what they listen to is that before AA and XM or Sirius about all the talk radio, or consistent radio they were able to get was right-wing hate-fest stuff like Flush Limpballs and his ilk. Satellite radio has been a great things for these guys and might just cure allot of the brainwashing.

97. I hope so. How awful to have hours of hate radio brainwashing every day
The ones I knew were before the great rise of hate radio and all it means. They were great people and I enjoyed their company. Not stupid and not jerks, but interesting people who carried respondibility and worked hard. They had their own community, at first tied together by the CB radio. Sort of a proto-internet in a way, IMO.

for? When I saw it the auction was several days from closing and the price was rising fast. Raised a lot of money for Celiac Sprue research. I still think he sold those puppets partly as a sort of protest about having to report the endless "pervert of the day" junk.

48. I wonder if he was surprised at how much they brought in. At least
SOMETHING good came out of that scene. He must have been awfully tired of the endless reporting on it. It was being used as a deliberate distraction for the serious events of the nation and the world, and he knew it. The superficial playlike aspect was perfectly captured with paper puppets - and I suspect he got tired of those too.

Great idea, selling them on Ebay. And that was a lot of money for a cause he cares about.

He's helping recruit more kids for the military.

Trying to convince them it's a great opportunity because once you've been out there, The Donald can't intimidate you in The Boardroom.

Of course, I'm sure he skips the part about how you might not make it to The Boardroom if you end up coming home in a body bag instead.

This talented photographer has a number of quite different series of photos. Here is one of his "red rocks" series - he also has photos of ponds and many other kinds of images. I love the lines and colors in this one (found here: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2223820&size=lg):

78. That is a beautiful picture and I have one just like it
in my living room. One of my favorite photographers is a guy named Andy Marquez. I own serveral of his photographs and a picture made from this exact location was the first one I purchased.

He has a gallery in Colorado, but where I met him was at one of the craft shows they have here in Charlotte. I think it was the Southern Christmas Show. He had a booth with copies of his photographs for sale.

He does some incredible work. Check out his web site to see some of his work.

Can you tell me anything about the origin of the quote in your sig line? It's so very appropriate to what we are facing in our country: the death of hope because people can only see the horror and fear and not the possibility of positive change.

And thanks for both these gifts - the new photographer and the amazing quote.

87. If I didn't leave links, it would feel like I was stealing them. This way
it's more like free advertising and a sincere compliment. The photographer hasn't lost anything and may have gained some admirers who can follow the link to his/her other work and contact information.

And it means that my KOEB friends can enjoy more of the beautiful work if they want.

I also use a trick I found out about a few weeks ago - if you insert

.nyud.net.8090

just after the main web site address (i.e., just after the .com or .net or whatever even if there are additional codes after it), the bandwidth for showing the image goes through a free public cache and the original site isn't "charged" for it. That can be important, since some IPs are very stingy about bandwidth and images can take a lot. The free public cache has enormous capacity - this is perfectly OK to do.

Anyway, so glad you liked my choices. It's really fun looking for them. I've liked your photos too and hope to see more of them!

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 02:15 PM by gkhouston
more parallels to some current events than I'd care to recall. Lasted five seasons, started off rocky and ended too abruptly, but seasons 3 and four were truly glorious. The above quote was from the very end of season four, if I recall correctly, and one of the characters was writing about an important event in the war in his diary. If you're ever inclined to rent anything to watch, this series would be worthwhile. Although there are some clunker episodes, it's worth watching the whole thing, because you see characters that you think are lightweights or trivial in the first season undergo all sorts of amazing and yet credible transformations.

on edit: and if you liked that quote on paper, you should really hear it recited in context. Wow.

a sci-fi work. I wondered if it might be Chinese, but that didn't seem right either. I never saw any of those episodes; I watch almost no TV. Now I'll see if I can find a rental. I do appreciate good sci fi in movies or in literature. I'm a great fan, for example, of the Vorkosigan series of Lois Bujold. That's another one that builds - though I thought the first two were good also.

the whole series start to finish and it was interesting to see certain characters make their debut while knowing what lay ahead for them. It was very much like re-reading a favorite book. The first season in particular was wildly uneven and had some spectacularly wooden acting in places, but hang in there; there are some jewels even in the first season. I think you'll enjoy the enigmatic qualities of the Minbari and Kosh.

99. As has already been mentioned
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 04:23 PM by Greylyn58
it was a scifi tv show called Babylon 5. It is truly an amazing show because it was written to be a 5 year show with a Beginning, a Middle, and an End. My dog Sheridan is named for one of the characters on the show, Capt. John Sheridan.

Babylon 5 is an amazing show about a space-station built and maintained by Earth with the intention of fostering knowledge and understanding of the different races in the galaxy. It was built after a devastating war with the Minbari(one of the races now present on the station) that happened due to a misunderstanding. A lot of what is happening now is eerily relevant to things that happened(to the humans and to earth) in this show. If you ever get the chance to watch it, do so because I think you'll get some chills from it.

The quote is from the 3rd season cliff-hanger episode called "Z'ha'dum" The character speaking it is former Ambassador G'Kar. He has some of the most amazing speeches during the run of the show

Here's another one G'Kar made after the Centauri attacked his world:
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power tyrants and dictators cannot stand. The Centauri learned that lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Although it take a thousand years, we will be free.

onedit:meant to leave this link where you can find out more about the show.

104. Thank you for this, Grey - now I am thoroughly intrigued. In a way, maybe
it's a good thing that I'm newly interested in it at a time when I can see the whole thing from the first by renting it out piece by piece and going through it.

Eerily relevant to the current world situation, all right.

I've always thought that calling what is being done to Iraq "Operation Iraqi Freedom" is one of the cruelest ironies ever, both for the soldiers who go there thinking it's for a good cause and for the Iraquis themselves, who know an invader and occupyer when they live with one.

105. What you might find really interesting
is starting in the 3rd season Earth becomes very militaristic. The President declares Marshall Law on Earth and puts a group in charge called The Night Watch

In the 2nd season a group was started called The Ministry of Peace and the Night Watch was an arm of this group. The inward-turning Earth government is using their "Nightwatch" as a means to silence dissent. (doesn't that sound familiar) There's a poster you will see in some of the episode in season 3 that says(Traitors can't Hide) :scared:

I loved and still love this show. If you ever watch it and want to discuss it, let me know. It's one of my all time favorites...ever.

106. The writers must have included some Orwell fans. There is a whole genre
of sci-fi that has a strong Orwellian subtext and takes it in different directions without losing the relevance to our current situation.

The choice of the names, opposite of their true meanings, is also both Orwellian and just like what happened in this corrupt administration. Operation Iraqi Freedom, Homeland Security, Patriot Act, Leave No Child Behind, Saving Social Security (not a buzzword title but a single-minded theme that is counter to fact and intention). There are many more. The irony is suffocating.

When I do know more about this series I will indeed enjoy discussing it with you. Have you read the Vorkosigan series of Lois Bujold? It is a splendid series that really is about three things more than anything else: psychology, politics and family. She loves engineers - her beloved father was one - and there is wonderful hard sci-fi with lots of engineering bits, but it's really about those three things. If you have not read it yet, PM me and I can tell you more and give you a list of the books. They should be in your local library.

There are some quotes from that series that have really stayed with me, both in this political situation and in my own life. Overall, there is insight, wit, humor and sadness, and a constructive worldview that lifts the spirits in a good way - because it reminds us of what CAN be done.

I'm a huge scifi/fantasy books fan...Harlan Ellison, Arthur C. Clark, George R. R. Martin, Isaac Asimov, etc.

Babylon 5 was the brain-child of J. Michael Straczynski and he wrote almost all of the episodes for the show...an amazing feat when you think about how some shows are written by committee.

109. Well, have you ever got a treat in store for you! Each of the books in
the series is different, with a different mix of serious philosophy, space opera, hard sci fi, political and psychological development, family and personal evolution, and the most dellightful humor.

The central character of a great cast is a physically disabled man (but he never lets that slow him down!) who is born to people who meet each other in the first book. He is a tactical genius and an enormously charismatic leader and charmer, and he starts with a chip on his shoulder because of his experience with very short stature and disability on a planet where physical strength and martial fitness are so highly prized. But it's not so simple as that suggests. His parents are very different people who grow to understand one another and in turn work to change the poltical structure and thoughts of their society, which begins very martial and conservative and evolves toward much greater progressivism.

Tonight or tomorrow I'll PM you with a list of the books. Whatever you can't find, I'm willing to loan to you - book rate shipment is very cheap. You really do need to read them in sequence. I'd adore discussing them with you and with any others who are interested.

110. Cool...Babylon 5 has some similar themes
about charismatic leaders, religion, full of humor. The series starts a little slow, but stick with it.

One of my favorite episodes is from season 1 called The Parliament of Dreams. It's funny, poignant and very entertaining.

It begins when Earth Central decides to have a planned cultural exchange where all alien societies on B5 will have the opportunity to demonstrate their dominant religious beliefs. There are several other story lines, but the one thing about this episode that I love the most is at the very end when they begin to show Earth's dominant belief. The alien ambassadors go into a room which contains hundreds of people, all of different religions. The Commander moves along a line formed by them, introducing them one-by-one to the aliens. There were, as the aliens commented, no drums, no bells, no chants--only a showcase of Earth's proud diversity.

It's a kick-ass show.

I pray that one day Earth(as a whole) will be that way and celebrate it's diversity instead of stomping on it.

And I'll PM you about the Vorkosigan books tomorrow.

This is an aspect of polticial/pscyological dialog too - fiction allows things to be acted out and said that are not as clear or as sayable in real life.

Hope everyone has a good night and great day tomorrow.
On Steph, C-span has the conference listed for the early AM if anyone missed it and wants to tape it. The schedule is here http://inside.c-spanarchives.org:8080/cspan/fullschedule.csp?timeid=211984466451
It may also be on sometime over the weekend since they tend to repeat shows from the week on weekends.

Keith had another great show but I think I am getting deep throat burn out already. Tired of the traitor word being yelled all over by the real traitors. Felt is a hero in my book. Also did these people forget that people stopped trusting the government in the 60's? Watergate just prove they were right to not trust the government.
Finished with my rant for the night.

Hugs to everyone.

82. He's ticked off that Felt's family, smelling payday, screwed him over.
At least that's what I think.

Felt may truly not be completely "all there" anymore...and he may not be long for this world...and his family decided they were going to push for him to cash in (ultimate profiteers...themselves, or at least it will help them pay his medical bills) before it was too late. So they did what they could to auction off his story to the highest bidder. If only they'd put it on eBay, they could've gotten thousands from GoldenPalace.com!

Meanwhile, W&B, who faithfully and honorably kept his secret all these years, got the shaft. Now they're stuck having to deal with a source who outed himself in a publication other than theirs, who is probably largely controlled and manipulated by others, who doesn't appear to recall half of what went on, and whose primary motive for finally telling all appears to be his family's avarice. Can't be a great situation to be in.

Ultimately, he did the right thing, back then. So did anyone who may have helped him--and it's possible, as Keith said, that he did have help.

What amazes me, though, is how any of THEM could have kept silent for all this time. You know the old saying: "Two people can keep a secret if one of them is dead." I can see W&B and Bradlee keeping the secret; they had journalistic ideals to drive them. But what about anyone else who was helping out? For all these years? Their ideals must have been pretty high, too. Maybe they believed so completely that what they were doing was right that they really did take and mean a vow never to say a word. And, somehow, they never (or have not so far, anyway) ended up in a position in which they were goaded to spill the beans.

Wouldn't it be interesting, though, if, now that the lead man has finally come clean, they one by one began stepping out of the woods...saying "Yeah, I helped, too..." Now that would be interesting and it would give Keith blog-fodder for eons to come. The only difficulty would be in trying to separate the truth-tellers from the phony opportunists who would also smell a potential payday in it all, rather like Wendy's Chili Woman.

Anyway, I guess this is all I have to say right now...I don't think I can make it back for tonight's show. Watching someone else host is just too painful...

I wish they WOULD start stepping ut of the woods with their stories of why they helped bring down that corrupt administration. The public - and all those would-be whistleblowers in THIS administration - need to hear how loyalty to law is more patriotic, not to mention more dangerous, than blind obedience to powerful but corrupt people who have abused their power.

Just THINK of all the whistleblowers out there for 9/11, Iraq, Halliburton, the elections.
