Anyone Else Tracking Cat 5 Cyclone in Autralia? Situation Dire
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 09:13 AM by leftyladyfrommo
Worst storm to ever hit there. Worse than Katrina. And this is the 2nd one this year. Awful!

I'm afraid we may be in for years of absolutely horrible storms.

Learning to live in this new environment may get tricky. Our houses and utilities are no built to withstand the kinds of storms that we are seeing all around the globe.

4. I saw that last night...
Sustained winds of 180mph with gusts to 220mph. An absolutely monstrous and well defined storm.

5. The only good thing is I don't think it is a really heavily
populated area - but I'm not familiar with Australia.

They just had a horrible cyclone three or four weeks ago.

8. Monica will hit Darwin tomorrow. Darwin is a port and largest NW city.
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 09:30 AM by TahitiNut
The population of Darwin is about 105,000 people. On Christmas Eve 1974 Darwin was almost completely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy. Of the town's 11,000 houses, only 400 survived relatively intact. Cyclone Monica is far larger than Cyclone Tracy, which has been the 'benchmark' of the largest to hit the area ever.

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! rage! blow!
You cataracts and hurricanes, spout
Till you have drench'd our steeples, drown'd the cocks!
You sulphurous and thought-executing fires,
Vaunt-couriers to oak-cleaving thunderbolts,
Singe my white head! And thou, all-shaking thunder,
Smite flat the thick rotundity o' the world!
Crack nature's moulds, and germens spill at once,
That make ingrateful man!

Rumble thy bellyful! Spit, fire! Spout, rain!
Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire, are my daughters:
I tax not you, you elements, with unkindness;
I never gave you kingdom, call'd you children,
You owe me no subscription: then let fall
Your horrible pleasure: here I stand, your slave,
A poor, infirm, weak, and despised old man:
But yet I call you servile ministers,
That have with two pernicious daughters join'd
Your high engender'd battles 'gainst a head
So old and white as this. O! O! 'tis foul!

King Lear, Act III. Scene II, William Shakespeare

10. Dread
Anyone else dreading the Atlantic hurricane season '06?

I'm thinking elevated ocean and gulf water temps worldwide are gonna cause much grief.

15. I think it's going to be god-awful.
Hurricans run in 30 year cycles. This new one just started. This could go on for years and years.

So why are we rebuilding NO? At least get the new levees up to spead.
