If you are male and over 40 in this world you will be asked if you were military.Yes,I was army 72-73.But amongst all past military folk, I find none finer than (and it hurts to say this) ex-marines (whom hate that term)....stolid-sure...pigheaded-yes,but talk one in to democraticness and you have built a machine!!!Find a single ex-marine and convert him and you will have done a great thing-you are starting with a guy (or girl) that loves what this country was when THEY were kids.I love these clowns for their loving of history and what this country WAS.Find one and you'll find a "republican" that hates them...

3. The marines and submariners...

understand that the cult of 'individual freedom' in this country is a crock. That we're only as good as the weakest among us. The ultimate teams and far, FAR more egalitarian than the rest of our society.

As an ex-Marine I am flattered by your words. I must point out however that some of us jarheads have always been Dems.
Going through boot camp we were taught, among other things, about the glorious history of the Marine Corps and the brave deeds of many Marines through the years. Marines doing heroic things in China, any number of South American countries, the Dominican Republic and the Phillipines.
It wasn't until I got out (1972) that I began to ask, why were Marines in these places to begin with? They told us it was to protect Americans and American interests.
Ahhhh, there's the rub. American interests. I'm not convinced that everyone would accept actions taken to preserve our American 'way of life' if they truly knew what that meant.
Our military is used to strongarm other countries into doing our will. Our will is shaped and driven by corporate interests. Corporate interests are driven by profit which is fueled by exploiting cheap raw materials, natural resources and labor.
Hence 'we' are in Iraq................

I joined up in '61 as a kinda patriotic liberal 17 year old. 4 years later I emerged a disillusioned, anti-militarist, anti-nationalist, Marxist.

One minor tip, when referring to U.S. Marines, the M is alway capitalized (it's a trademark). Ironically, I believe a former army dog is the best prospect for President today, that being Al Gore.

I went to volunteer for the Marines at the tender age of 14 and I'm convinced I would have given my life. I'm sure if necessary, I'd do the same today. But 14-year olds don't ask questions and they certainly don't begin to understand politics. This nation has a history of being a warrior. Young men always pay the dues, and it was America's way to always be behind what America was doing. And the issues and the reasons why were always argued after the fact. Speaking of after the fact, it's a national shame the way we treat our vets. You see, to be an American you want to respect everything you know about this great country. Those who have the gumption to investigate, know that the reputation of honesty between the government and the people cannot reflect the reason for a single man to have confidence in what we're doing in current day conditions. I'm suspicious, I'm paranoid, and I'm afraid. And the person who says he isn't has not looked up or around lately.
