BREAKING: 32% in CNN/Gallup poll
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 03:57 PM by tgnyc
right now. Wolf called it "lowest ever in any publicly released poll." Mentioning Nixon, Carter, HW Bush poll #'s for reference. "Saying he's getting close..."

40% "honest and trustworthy"

16. Both parties do it all the time.
Frequently, it's done to help them make decisions. Why not release? Well, for one, if the poll tells you America wants A and you decide to do B anyway, releasing the poll opens you to criticism of not doing what the people want. Also, even though most pols live or die by the polls these days, they don't want their constituents to know just how much polling they do. Third, you might be polling just to take the temperature of the nation for something you're not nearly ready to do. Releasing the poll can force you to make a decision now rather than when you're ready.

37. Well, if they took my temperature
they'd know between that and the blood pressure it's been pretty high since 2000, and elevated upward in leaps and bounds during the stolen-election fiasco of 2004.

Sure would like our country back to some sort of normalcy. Only way is to IMPEACH the bums asap.

If this lot took your temperature, you can bet it would be with a telephone pole sized rectal thermometer.

I'm with you, though. It's been a lousy 5+ years in which nearly every everything Americans used to take pride in was crapped on.

145. What?
Who is "he"?

Wolf was not refering to the CNN poll...he said : "this is the lowest of any publicly releaed poll" meaning....any of the ones done for media.....and releaed publicly....as opposed to ones done for the DNC or the GOP which are not released publicly.

The notion that CNN/Gallup is witholding polls is just silly. They perform these polls on a schedule.

Even though I live in a red area of a red state, I still find it hard to believe that more than one in three Americans are (to borrow a term from other sources) "true believers" in Chuckles McChimpy. I can believe that 35% are ardent conservatives who ain't never gonna vote for a John Kerry, but it's hard for me to believe that a third of the country are ass-backwards bible thumpers who believe that * talks to Jesus every night or who otherwise think that he's the Marcus Aurelius of our time. I just can't believe that people are that stupid. Although I've been proved wrong....

His numbers are headed South and will most likely get worse but, until I see a deligation of Repub Senators make a trip over to the WH to tell Georgie to start packing, I'm thinking this guy is going to be leaving with a few clawmarks on the doorways. He'll set the dictionary example of "kickin' and screamin'" before he'd leave.

Now as for what this does to the Dem's changes in Nov............I'm grinnin' from ear to ear everytime I hear what you two are talkin' about.

73. Yes, we can say that with 90.5% confidence.
Such polls typically state their Margin of Error with a 95% confidence. So, for two polls with a difference in 4% with a Margin of Error of 3%, 'A' at 36% and 'B' at 32%, we can say that the populations represented actually have A > B is 90.5% probable. There's a 9.5% chance that Junior's approval either remains unchanged or has increased, but there's a 90.5% chance that his approval in the represented population has decreased.

But that's statistics ... something few really bother to understand. :dunce: :silly:

27. Actually, I would contend
that the difference between 34% and 32% is a HUGE change.

ANALYSIS: Below 40% is digging deep into the unflappable support that got him elected a second time. A 2% drop is his political capital being pissed away at a rate of hundreds of thousands of people in the course of a week. I'd say it has a bit to do with gas prices, sabre rattling with Iran, nothing happening on immigration, pissypants oubursts ("I'm the decider!"), and an idiotic visit with China's leadership.

BENEFITS: The 2% who turned are somehow associated with the remaining 32%. That 2% will talk to coworkers, family, and friends... they may just convince a few of them to turn on Bush as well.

OUTLOOK: Without something drastic changing, there's nowhere but down for these numbers to go, and the plunge to Nixonian levels will take A LONG TIME. The good news is that he's trending towards Nixonian levels. But trends are sometimes troubling when you are looking for a result - he may go up for a few weeks, and then back down to 32%.

I agree on its face it doesn't seem like much, and it isn't big news, but anytime "NEW LOW" is mentioned, it's a DAMN GOOD THING.

group of kool-aid drinkers. These people must talk to each other (Lord knows I never would speak to one). When one of these people jumps ship it is an act of mutiny, not just a visit to an interesting port of call.

34. Every drop will be only incremental.
It's the accumulated damage that matters, and the steady downward plunge. It's OK to get excited at each new record low.

I heard this AM that the new Chief of Staff is telling him to go out on a big tour, like the Medicaid tour he just did. I hope so; each time he does one of those his numbers drop a couple more points.

56. What's the time frame?
Recently another poll had him losing 3% twice in two-week periods (6% overall) -- was it the Fox poll? If Bush is losing 2% or 3% every couple of weeks -- and he's still going down, as far as we can tell -- he WILL be in Nixon territory in a month or two.

125. How far away can attacking Iran be with freefalling....
poll numbers like that? There's only one card they have left, the "get behind the war president" card. And when that fails........? There's going to have to be some serious wagging of the dog to get bush going in the other direction, if it can be done at all. The American public seems to have put on their x-ray specs, they seemingly can see right through bush and his stoopid tricks now where as they couldn't before his Iraq attack. There may BE no recovery for bush which makes him, in my opinion, a very dangerous man. A petulant rich boy with a room temperature IQ, a messianic complex, coupled with being a dry drunk does not make for a stable mind. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

129. Can you explain what you mean by that?
Is the selection of people that is affected by the election? I thought a poll was supposed to be a random sampling and the percentages are just based on responses.

btw, I'm not trying to argue; I'm just dense!

143. Best I know
They weight the percentage of democrats and republicans based on elections. At least they do for election polls when they figure out who is a likely voter.

I could very well be wrong but I think that false election results will affect the weighting of subsequent opinion polls.

76. Wait for the GOP talking point. "With a margin of error, it could be 35%"
I'll wait for the patheticness to begin. But to be fair to Mr Bush, this 32% approval rating is despite the fact that he talks like a 12 year old, demonizes his critics, hires and rewards his incompetant croneys, screwed up the budget, muddled the economy, shipped hundreds of thousands of good quality jobs overseas, failed to find the worst terrorist in US history & claimed not to worry about it, covered up the betrayal of a CIA agent, ruined our alliances, bolstered the ranks of our enemies, ruined our country's good name in the Third World, violated the Constitution like it's going out of style, and did something else... hmmm... what was it? Ah yes, he also started an unnecessary war that killed thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis directly and over 100,000 indirectly.

When you take all that into consideration, a 32% approval rating really ain't half bad.

142. Something's fishy here
Gallup has W's approval at 90% after 9/11:

This graph shows him nowhere near that.

149. The graph in original message shows 2nd term only.
GW Bush's 90% "Lucky Trifecta" approval spike came during his first term.

152. What Next
My worry is that he is bottoming out too soon. This man has made a career out of just doing a little better than everyone's low expectations. With poll numbers this low, does that mean everyone has also lowered their expectations of him? If that is the case, will a couple of small things really turn these numbers around.

For instance, if * could someone convince the oil people to bring the price of gas below $2 for the summer and we get the head of Osama, will people turn their opinion...And will this change of opinion give Repubs in house and senate elections enough late momentum to win close races?

I wish it were August/September with these numbers. April gives everyone just a little too much time.

I continue to worry.

155. Wolfie needs to report the polls NOT "publicly released"
Those have to be down in the low teens!
