Santorum, Frist Organize Religious Petitions Against Gay Marriage
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 03:25 PM by ourbluenation
Does anyone else think the mean spiritedness of attempting to amend the constitution to take away civil rights will bite these people back in the ass? I mean, if you're not gay, then just about everyone knows someone who is gay...this is some rightie mean thing if you ask me and I doubt most americans will support it.

This just pisses me off.

**********************

About 50 prominent religious leaders, including seven Roman Catholic cardinals and about a half-dozen archbishops, have signed a petition in support of a constitutional amendment blocking same-sex marriage.

Organizers of the petition said it was in part an effort to revive the groundswell of opposition to same-sex marriage that helped bring many conservative voters to the polls in some pivotal states in 2004. The signers include many influential evangelical Protestants, a few rabbis and an official of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

But both the organizers and gay rights groups said what was striking about the petition was the direct involvement by high-ranking Roman Catholic officials, including 16 bishops. Although the church has long opposed same-sex unions, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops had previously endorsed the idea of a constitutional amendment banning such unions, it was evangelical Protestants who generally led the charge when the amendment was debated in 2004.

2. Nope. These guys are just trying to find some of that '04 magic
when the bigots came out in droves to vote against gay marriage.

It's one of the last cards they have to deal this year...It doesn't matter if it's the same tired card.

4. Yeah maybe...stir the pot. But what about all those religious leaders
how can they sign a petition re: the constitution and still have their tax exempt status.

5. They're on the wrong side of history
They're on the wrong side, period.

The opposition, nationwide, to same-sex marriage is dropping. There still is a majority of people in this country that oppose same-sex marriage. But it's very encouraging to see that more people are supporting same-sex marriage.

You've said something important...about everyone knowing someone who is gay. That's the best thing we have going for us...more and more gay and lesbian people coming out to their families, friends, co-workers. When more people know someone who is gay or lesbian, then they just may start changing their attitudes towards homosexuality in general...and same-sex marriage in particular. I know this dynamic is behind the shift in attitudes we're seeing right now. We still have a ways to go in this country...but we're moving in the right direction.

This stupid, hatemongering amendment is doomed to fail. I don't give a good goddamned if the Pope himself pushes it. The majority of the American people doesn't want this amendment. It shows in poll after poll after poll.

9. Why not an amendment to ban divorce - the one thing Jesus actually told
them was adultery - which is one of those Big 10 No No's they keep wanting to post in the courtroom and schoolhouse. Maybe they need to re-read it.
