Bird Flu and other Scams
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 07:14 PM by Dover
A friend just forwarded this to my email. I don't know the source or if it's accurate, but wouldn't be a bit surprised. I haven't thought twice about the bird flu hype, as it seemed
just another scare tactic that resulted in someone making a lot of money...a very common scenario these days.

And as long as I'm posting about scams, I've included another one I received from the same friend about Olive Oil...which Dr. Weil has agreed is true. This shocked me more than the bird flu scam.

What next?

>> "Bird Flu"
>> Do you know that 'bird flu' was discovered in Vietnam 9 years ago?
>> Do you know that barely 100 people have died in the whole world in all
>> that time?
>> Do you know that it was the Americans who alerted us to the efficacy
>>of the human antiviral TAMIFLU as a preventative.
>> Do you know that TAMIFLU barely alleviates some symptoms of the common
>> flu?
>> Do you know that its efficacy against the common flu is questioned by
>> a great part of the scientific community?
>> Do you know that against a SUPPOSED mutant virus such as H5N1, TAMIFLU
>> barely alleviates the illness?
>> Do you know that to date Avian Flu affects birds only?
>> Do you know who markets TAMIFLU?
>> ROCHE LABORATORIES.
>> Do you know who bought the patent for TAMIFLU from ROCHE LABORATORIES
>> in 1996?
>> GILEAD SCIENCES INC.
>> Do you know who was the then president of GILEAD SCIENCES INC. and
>>remains a major shareholder?
>> DONALD RUMSFELD, the present Secretary of Defence of the USA.
>> Do you know that the base of TAMIFLU is crushed aniseed?
>> Do you know who controls 90% of the world's production of this tree?
>> ROCHE.
>> Do you know that sales of TAMIFLU were over $254 million in 2004 and
>>more than $1000 million in 2005?
>> Do you know how many more millions ROCHE can earn in the coming months
>>if the business of fear continues?
>> So the summary of the story is as follows:
>> Bush's friends decide that the medicine TAMIFLU is the solution for a
>>pandemic that has not yet occurred and that has caused a hundred deaths
>>worldwide in 9 years.
>> This medicine doesn't so much as cure the common flu.
>> In normal conditions the virus does not affect humans.
>> Rumsfeld sells the patent for TAMIFLU to ROCHE for which they pay him
>> a fortune. Roche acquires 90% of the global production of crushed
>>aniseed, the base for the antivirus.
>> The governments of the entire world threaten a pandemic and then buy
>>industrial quantities of the product from Roche.
>> So we end up paying for medicine while Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush do
>>the business as usual.

Question:

I’ve heard that most of the olive oil sold in the United States isn’t really olive oil but something else passed off as “extra-virgin” or whatever. Is this true?

Answer:

Unfortunately, it appears to be true. I've been doing some research lately on the untold olive oil story, which is a scandal in need of widespread exposure and corrective measures. I'll be reporting on what I've learned this week in response to questions that I've been asked on the subject.

..snip..

Most of the olive oil sold in the United States is imported from Italy or Spain. While some Italian and Spanish olive oils are of very high quality, many products sold in the United States as "extra-virgin" may be a lesser grade of olive oil and some may be primarily canola or hazelnut oil to which a small amount of olive oil has been added for color and taste. Some olive oil we get here may come from pomace, the olive pulp left after pressing out the oil. Additional oil can be extracted from pomace by treating it with hexane, a chemical solvent - not a good practice. Even when the bottle contains genuine olive oil, it may not be from Italy or Spain as the labels suggest - both countries import huge quantities of cheaper olive oils from Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco or Libya, bottle them and label them "imported from" Italy or Spain. This is deceptive marketing.

Tomorrow, I'll discuss the loopholes in U.S. laws that allow the sale of substandard olive oils here.

4. Don't Be So Sure
While I agree the MSM doesn't cover "news" fairly, they are leaning wayyyy to the right, I'll have to say the following about H5N1:

The Avian Flu, H5N1 is an influenza virus that appears to be very deadly to birds, and to the humans who have contracted it from birds.

It may never become a human to human virus; it may become a human to human virus; it may be very deadly if it does; it may not be very deadly if it does.

The fact of the matter is that we know only so much about the virus.

For instance, we don't know how many people in areas that have had the Avian flu endemic (in birds) have been exposed to it. We only know how many have gotten very sick. It is possible that most people don't get very sick from it. We also don't have any idea what will happen if it becomes transmissable from human to human. As stated above, it could be bad, it could be just another flu.

So panic is not in order. Tamiflu is probably not the answer since it may not be very effective against it anyway. Vaccine will be the answer if it does become human to human and if it is very deadly. Otherwise, good handwashing, staying away from those who are sick, and if you are sick, stay away from others, rest, drink lots of fluids, and if you have a chronic respiratory condition you may need prophylactic antibiotics to prevent secondary infection.

2. The part about Rumsfeld to make mega $$ from the Tamiflu vac is true.
As of April 21, 2006 there were 204 confirmed cases world wide and of those 113 died. Other then that I'm not sure of the info's accuracy.

Dr. Mercola has some interesting thoughts about the bird flu... he believes that the bird flu epidemic is a hoax: http://www.mercola.com/2005/oct/25/avian_flu_epidemic_is_a_hoax.htm

As for the olive oil.. it doesn't surprise me. I'll have to read further what Dr. Weil says about it but for me he's a highly believable source.

3. There is a bill, H.R.4167 that just passed the House
There is a bill, H.R.4167 that just passed the House (in March06) and is now waiting for the Senate committee to decide whether to offer an analagous bill. It is called, The National Uniformity for Foods Act of 2005. You can read about this orwellian named act at http://www.afdo.org/afdo/HR4167.cfm. and here is the problem: this is about forcing the states to only put on the labels what the FDA approves and it will probably invalidate all the food safety labelling that the states have passed unless the FDA first approves them. I think we probably all understand that means may labels about mercury and other things will take forever to be approved. Please write your senators and congressman and letters to the editor and the committee members. There are several websites out there talking about this: google it for more info. This is a bill that has been rejected several times but managed to pass under the radar this time. There is even a website out there (a little edgy...) that claims it is about glutamate, but you can judge: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/.

The important thing is that it gives food and chemical associations and lobbying unpresidented access to what goes on our food labels and that cannot be a good thing.

To see if your congressional rep co-sponsored HR 4167 see: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR04167:@@@P

Major actions on this bill can be viewed at: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR04167:@@@L&summ2=m&#major%20actions

The final roll call was 283 to 139 (passed). See how the vote went down at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll032.xml

5. I had written McHugh about this but to no avail. Although there have been
a few times when he's voted the way I feel he should (like the Budget Bill) he's basically a Republican through and through.

I've tried to find who his opponent is but nada... all I can figure is that he may not be up for re-election this year.. I do remember that his last election was won by a whisker so hopefully we can change to Dem up here next time.

7. (OT) Yes! Thank you so much...
So far i like what I've read about Dr. Johnson. Now that I have a name hopefully I'll be able to find out more about all of his stances... those he addresses on his website are pretty much in line with mine and already he looks much better then McHugh.

It won't be easy to beat McHugh but there's a chance since most folks I've spoken with up here (NNY turning purple/blue from red).... they are NOT happy with Bush and the Republicans in office.

Thank you again! :yourock:
