Apparently, Graham volunteered to 'coach' Alito during closed 'moot court' sessions - i.e. preliminary run-throughs of the confirmation hearings.
This is not unlike 'witness prep' in a court case. And Graham (from what I've read here and elsewhere) fell into the trap that many lawyers set for themselves when they 'over prepare' a witness for trial.
They already know what the answer to every question will be, so they tend to interupt the witness mid-answer, or forget to ask certain 'foundation questions' altogether -- assuming (wrongly) that the judge/jury has already heard the answers they've rehearsed a million times.
It's not unlike the movie biz -- as they always say, if you're going to write, don't try to also direct.
