DETROIT: Wayne State to honor journalist Helen Thomas

Longtime White House reporter Helen Thomas is to be inducted today into the David Mackenzie Honor Society at Wayne State University.

Members are chosen for their contributions to the university and the community. Thomas, who was raised in Detroit and graduated from Wayne State, will return today to receive her award. The 85-year-old lives in Washington, D.C.

During her 57 years with the United Press International, Thomas covered every president since John F. Kennedy. She retired as the wire service's White House bureau chief in 2000 and became a columnist for King Features Syndicate. Thomas, who has written three books, was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1986.

The society is named for David Mackenzie, the first dean of what is now the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
