These Bush quotes on oil prices did NOT go down the memory hole
The perfect email gift for those freepers on your list.

Fellow DUer Sydnie posted these quotes on Sunday:

“I think the president ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say: ‘We expect you to open your spigots’ …The president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price. And if, in fact, there is collusion amongst big oil, he ought to intercede there as well.”
Financial Times, February 2, 2000

“I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply. … Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot.”
New York Times, June 28, 2000

“We're dependent upon crude. … I would hope the administration would convince our friends in OPEC to open the spigots.”
Los Angeles Times, June 22, 2000

“I think Americans ought to be asking, ‘Where's all the capital we earned overseas after defending some of our OPEC nation friends?’”
Associated Press, March 20, 2001

“Well, we've got good relations with a lot of members of OPEC. If the president does his job, the president will earn capital in the Middle East, and the president should have good standing with those nations. It's important for the president to explain, in clear terms, what high energy prices will not only do to our economy, but what high energy prices will do to the world economy.”
CNN, January 26, 2000

3. Who thinks that Dim Son has earned 'capital in the Middle East' and
is in 'good standing with those nations'? It's a wonder that we can even buy crude from any nation other than Saudi Arabia.

"...Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis..."

Bolding mine. Future tense his.

How did he intend to earn capital with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis? Hmmm, what nation might be a concern of theirs? Hmmm...

7. He needs to pick up the phone & call US oil industry execs & refineries
Oil producers in MT, WY, and ND are about to stop drilling. They are getting shafted by the refineries. Less than $40 a barrel for sweet crude coming from around here. People are about to turn off their drills. Governors are sorta curious about why drillers in the Middle East, Gulf and other places are getting over $70 a barrel while Colorado refineries are stiffing more local producers.

Some of the oil is high sulfur, but our Farm & Ranch Weekly (alas, not online) reported early this month that the SWEET CRUDE was only getting $32 a barrel. Governors of the three states had a meeting about the disparity. Haven't heard how they fared with the oil men. Not holding my breath.

10. My that was first thought, too
:hi:

Surely there must be a way to blame the high prices on 9/11.

11. I just fired off a related email to a right-winger friend
He actually said this: "I hope the "tree huggers" are happy that they have cost the American public so much money on gas." I told him he was in denial.

I shared these links with him:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,154423,00.html

http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/july2000/nf00710a.htm

and reminded him that when Bush began his presidency in January 2001, a gallon of regular gasoline was $1.44.

Life is good.
