You Can Criticize Jenna’s Dad, but Not While She’s Spinning, Thank You

A spin class instructor at The Sports Club/LA is apparently among the 57 percent of Americans who disapprove of President Bush’s job performance. He could soon be among the 4.7 percent of Americans who are unemployed.

The instructor launched into a Bush-bashing tirade during Thursday’s early morning spinning-and-sweating session. And it didn’t go over so well with two of his pupils, whom he obviously had no idea were there: Jenna Bush and boyfriend Henry Hager.

“Obviously had no idea”? We’re not so sure. Depends on how big the class was, of course, but we think we’d notice a First Daughter hanging around. Henry — good sort, that one — bitched out the club, and they assured Hank (we can call you Hank, can’t we?) that, uh, it wouldn’t happen again. But they didn’t fire the instructor.

Considering that we’ve heard from Madeleine Albright’s gym buddy recently, we figure one of you must work out at the Sports Club — you wanna stop by Glenn’s class and ask him if he knew who was in his audience? Alternatively, bring a camera crew and get all Barbara Harrison on Jenna and Hank.

Though it is possible that Glenn didn’t know they were there: Jenna and Babs, just like real-life celebrities, employ pseudonyms when doing public stuff like working out, running marathons (which they did recently in Richmond as “Emily and Sarah Jackson of Arlington.”), or drinking illegally (we miss those days, yes we do).

My father was a teacher and granted, she probably doesn't have to work a second job coaching as he did to supplement his income, but the official word has been that she is working teaching at a charter school in DC. How, then, can she be working out in LA on a Thursday?

24. Me! Because if it was a public school teacher, you can bet

there would be an enormous outcry. My dad recently retired after teaching for 30-odd years, and let me tell you, the community follows teachers around with gimlet eyes. The taxpayers have the wrong idea that public school teachers ride some kind of gravy train and resent every day off, every vacation, every minute they are not working.

One of the many things wrong with charter schools is that the people who teach in them aren't really teaching professionals. So it irks me to not only hear her teaching career lauded, but to hear that she spends Thursday mornings in spin class.

and could give a rat's ass about the bush daughters, but you've got to be kidding that a community would freak out if they found out that a teacher was going to an exercise class before work (or was going to an exercise class during spring break).

It's an intense stationery bicylce class, it usually lasts an hour, and you definitely need to shower afterwards because you work up a huge sweat. It's also fairly exhausting, though I know she is young and can probably handle that angle of it.

Our school started at something like 8:20 a.m. and teachers needed to be there an hour ahead of time.

But anyway, it was that part of the story that caught my eye.

The place would have been checked out in advance by the Secret Service and agents would be at the doors to the class. The amount of security those two have could not possibly go unnoticed. If the instructor did go off on a chimp-bashing tirade, it was because he did know who was there and wanted her to know what he thinks of her asshole father.

There is no way he could have missed the Secret Service coterie in the back of the room, even if Jenna has dropped a few pounds and let her hair go back to its natural brown.

My guess is that the "tirade" was between him and someone who agreed with him, overheard by some little right wing pimple who relayed it to the Secret Service later when HE spotted them.

Obviously, management thought it smelled, too. Any instructor who lets fly in front of a class will likely be considered unstable and let go. This is just more right wing distortion, in all likelihood.

First, the guy is paid by the gym to teach a class, not spout off his political opinions to a group of people. If he honestly did this in front of everyone then he probably would have been fired and rightfully so.

As you said, he was probably having an off-the-clock discussion with someone and got overheard by another person who had an issue with whatever was said.
