Poll question: which is the greatest (worst) source of discrimination in America? |
|
and why?
which is the most widespread?
which is the most complete?
which is the most severe?

1. It's supposedly body fat. Fat people are less likely to be hired |
|
for jobs. I read a couple of studies about this.
People think overweight people are: self-indulgent, lazy, unhealthy, etc. ALL of which don't play well in the workplace.

2. The advertising industry is the biggest "source", imo. |
|
No one's thin enough, rich enough, white enough, black enough, PC enough, pretty enough, normal enough, bad enough, enough enough. 24/7...It's an American mantra.
I'm obviously misreading your poll intent, but that's what came to mind.

taller people have a BIG advantage over shorter people in many ways. tall people get promoted more often, selected as team lead more often, etc. i'm talking white-collar workplace, where height is theoretically completely irrelevant.

17. because so much of our culture is based on capitalism |
|
wealth neatly divides us into classes and allows the segregation (in housing, access to services, participation in cultural events, education, etc.) to be ignored.

THEY are ignorant
same for all 3 question. You have individual discrimination based on race, religion nationality BUT Discrimination based on orientation is acceptable. Interesting that there is an anti-Israel blowback because of the war & our support of Israel.

12. The problem with class is that is not a protected category |
|
And usually potential employers can provide some justification as to why they might not want to hire someone who is seeking to be upwardly mobile. There is the whole "networking" issue as well. Some people know people who are in a position to hire them. Some people don't know anyone who is in a position to hire them, especially in their chosen field. Even though these things are true, with a lot of work one can change their class. One cannot change their race aside from certain people who can "pass", which in itself is usually genetics.

13. What about sex and sexual orientation??? |
|
Those are two HUGE sources of discrimination in this country (in some ways they can be viewed as one)...any poll on discrimination needs to include them...and it appears to me that you have plenty of open spaces on your poll to add them, if you'd like.

14. Discrimination on the basis of physical appearance |
|
and the information it contains is the most widespread. That would include discrimination based on weight, age, homliness (or lack thereof), height, gender, race, socio-economic class, etc.
