Question about membership numbers at DU
It says we have 88,331 members currently on DU. I was wondering the following:

When someone gets banned, does the number go down...or is that number repreented of every single person who has ever registered at DU, whether they're still here or not?

Just curious.

1. It's not 88,331 "members".
It's 88,331 user registrations.

3. It does not say that we have 88,331 members currently on DU.
It says we have 88,331 user registrations ... since January 2001.

That means exactly what it says: User registrations since January 2001. They're all included in that number.

4. There is a rather large graveyard
populated by disruptors who disrupted poorly. An enterprising person with time on their hands could count the tombstones and figure out the numbers. Also, there are many people who don't post anymore, they've moved on for whatever reason.

7. There are some people who changed their names.

I think they would be registered as two different people one of which is inactive.

I remember the name change amnesty but I don't know how that affected ones post counts or registration. Some user profiles have "I used to be ...." in the comment line.

Not that I would need to do that. Excuse me, I've got to find some people.

The only thing affected was my username.

10. Cool! I had not been an active DUer for that long and I was confused
about the whole amnesty deal. I'd lurked for ages (a year or more) and finally signed up.
DU is the only forum or website on which I've ever posted.

5. So about how many active users are there?
I'm fairly new here, though I've been posting on Liberal Forum for a while. Anyone have a rough and ready estimate as to about how many people visit DU on a regular basis?

6. Because DU is addictive I would guess that most people
who find their way here one time never really leave.

Also, I have many friends who have never registered but read the posts continually.

11. Maybe they could get the number of active accounts...
and then subtract from that number those that havn't been used in the last 30 or so days?

12. One way--
You can look at the user profiles. Click on the little index card thingie next to my screen name, then look at the User Profiles box there on the left, which breaks down screen names numerically & alphabetically.

Add up the numbers of screen names (which doesn't include tombstoned or resigned members) and you'll have the number of currently registered screen names. (This wouldn't take into account anyone with more than one username.)

(I'm too lazy to do the addition myself.)
