while they're trying to put together an INDEPENDENT authority to begin to govern, so we can leave. The last thing the new ascendants need is the mugs of Rice and Rummy hanging over them. Every time they show up they put the US stamp on anything that comes out of Baghdad.

Rumsfeld, Rice visit Iraq for meetings

(CBC) - U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have made an unannounced visit to Iraq amid an upswing in violence aimed at American troops in the country.

Rumsfeld arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday morning to hold meetings with Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander, and other members of the senior military team in the country.

Rice arrived separately on Wednesday, flying in from Turkey.

She and Rumsfeld were scheduled to meet with prime minister-designate Jawad al-Maliki, and intended to lobby for a new Iraqi cabinet that does not include "divisive" sectarian representatives.

1. Makes you wonder if they are getting ready to cut and run
then they can blame Dem's and the press for leaving IRaq high and dry. Just in time for elections.

2. I expect more international leaders to visit Iraq in the coming weeks
It makes sense for the US to send their representatives. Besides, its a good way to size up PM al-Maliki.

3. that's not what this visit was about.
they intend to 'lobby for a new Iraqi cabinet'

more meddling. I'm certain it doesn't escape the attention of the Iraqis.

4. If only they would stay there...they could report all the good news
daily...or the Iraqis could just arrest them (do they enter the country legally?)

8. Gosh! ANOTHER "Surprise Visit"?
After how many do they quit being surprises?

"Air Force One-Two, Baghdad Tower.
You're cleared to land, runway Two-Seven."
"Roger Baghdad Tower. Air Force One-Two."

In Baghdad Approach Control:
"Who's that, Charlie?"
"Another 'surprise vist' by a bunch of DC types."
"Great."

9. And if things are going so swimmingly in Iraq
Why do all these visits have to be "surprise" visits? I guess I should be glad that these odious people are surprising the Iraqis over there so that they don't feel like they have to surprise us over here.
