Yesterday, it was reported that the Bush administration was trying to intimidate former CIA officers into silence. CIA Director Porter Goss stated it wasn’t so, but, the report was based statements from several former CIA officers.
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20060427-083458-2602rOn Washington Journal this morning, Rep Peter Hoekstra, R-Michigan the Intelligence Committee Chairman stated that the Intelligence Committee was holding the president to the law when it came to intelligence gathering and the use of intelligence. He went on to say that because it was secret he just couldn’t go into the particulars.
In other words just trust us, we are acting in your best interest. Of course we have history to see how that works. That plea for trust us was used by Nixon as he sent out teams to break and enter, as he spied on peace marchers and other political enemies for which he kept a list.
The American public should answer with an empathic and resounding “Hell no, we do not trust you.” The Republicans should understand that, since they coined the phrase, “Trust, but verify.”
