Let's help Katie Couric come up with a sign-on and sign-off statements!
I remember coming of age with Walter Cronkite and CBS News. I remember especially during the 1960s of seeing the Vietnam War every evening in my living room. I remember Cronkite signing off with each evening's newscast with "And that's the way it is," whether good or bad.

Now Katie Couric will become the new CBS anchor, taking over in that seat once filled by Cronkite and others. In order to help Ms. Couric with the transition from "Today Show" to CBS News, I suggest we come up with signing-on and signing-off statements that she can use.

Signing on:

Good evening. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Some people say...(followed by top news story).

Signing off:

... and that's the news for today. I hope it wasn't a real buzzkill for you.

10. LOL!!!
I forgot about that moment in the history of American journalism.

Military Groupie Prize -- Katie Couric of NBC's "Today" Show

"Well, Commander Thompson," said Couric on April 3, in the midst of the invasion carnage, "thanks for talking with us at this very early hour out there. And I just want you to know, I think Navy SEALs rock."

12. But no one watches anymore, that's the problem
Even though they may have more TOTAL viewers than they have in the past, they don't have the percentage of the nation that they used to have. Back in the day, you had yer ABC, CBS, or NBC, and that was IT. Even PBS went off the air in the afternoon, so there was no Lerher news way back when.

Now, with 24 hour news, they can't compete. Well, they COULD--if they would get smart, and do a full hour newscast, with in-depth reporting, field reports, and REAL NEWS. They could do like some of the networks are doing, and experiment with webcasting, as well as make it available ON DEMAND with the cables. They should gather up the local news too, and make that available with a click of a remote or a mouse--the way people move around nowadays, they might like to see what is happening in the cities and towns they used to live in, and perhaps hope to return to some day.

They need to shift the paradigm. I'd rather get one hour of good, smart, thinking, detailed WORLD news, that I could watch at two in the morning with a push of a button, than the Britney-drops-a-baby shit that passes for news now.

We have so much in terms of technological resources, and our news outlets do not deliver, and make us (well, not US, but the nation as a whole) the stupidest bastards on the planet. We really have no clue as to how the other half lives. There are people out there who friken think DARFUR is a faux fur fabric for a fall fashion line!
