49. If you can, get an external FireWire drive and back everything up

a few items at a time. Then, if you can, install an operating system on that drive and restart from it. If you have TechTool Pro and/or DiskWarrior, or Norton Utilities, use it to run diagnostics on the physical structure of the internal drive, as well as the file structure. Plus, if you don't want techs to have access to your files, you might reformat the internal drive before it goes to the shop... after you have backed up your files.

56. I've been back up my programs, photos, movies and so on to my external

firewire drive. I can't run DiskWarrior on my hard drive, so I'm not sure how to reformat my internal hard drive :shrug: :hi: :loveya: :hug: :pals:

62. If you have an operating system on your external hard drive, you should be

able to select it as a start up disk, then restart. If you successfully restart from the external disk, you should be able to run complete diagnostics on the internal drive (provided that the diagnostic applications are also on and started up from the external drive). If you are sure everything is backed up (hopefully on DVDs/CDs as well), then you can use the Apple Disk Utility to erase the internal drive (you can also use DiskWarrior to erase the internal drive). Then you can run tests on the wiped disk and even reinstall a minimal operating system, if you are interested in running more tests. Otherwise, you can send it to the Mac doctor as it is... OR, you can buy an internal drive from Small Dog or Otherworld Computing (or any vendor you wish), and then install it yourself! You can find many websites concerning installing Mac parts (some vendors have .pdf files for easy installation). Just find the instructions, print them out, and follow the directions. If you want, I can help you look for the parts you need... I suggest you upgrade your RAM at the same time, if you had planned on doing it at some point.
