Bush helps build a house in the Upper Ninth Ward in New Orleans

U.S. President George W. Bush helps volunteers build a new home in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, April 27, 2006. Bush made the trip on Thursday to highlight National Volunteer Week. A Senate panel on Thursday recommended that the heavily criticized Federal Emergency Management Agency be replaced with a new agency that would be better able to respond to disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

3. Bet it took a lot of taxpayer dollars to get the point of being able
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 01:45 PM by Whoa_Nelly
to take that shot. Not only the amount of money to get that asswipe there, but also the clearing of debris, making the area swept clean of anything that might be in the least irritating or not aesthetic, putting the "right" people in place for any photo ops, the forward guard, so to speak, to make sure the area was secure, doctors on hand in case something goes wrong and The Decider of Nail Placement gets hurt...and am sure there was more.

9. what the hell is he doing?
kinda a rhetorical question, but really, i understand it's just a ten minute photo-op, but what is he supposed to be doing in that pic? anybody who's built anything knows that walls are nailed together laying flat on the floor, then raised into position. there is no reason for him to be pretending to drive a nail up at the top, in the middle of a wall like that. WTF?

11. But this way the camera gets to look up at him and make him look titanic.
An overhead picture of him crouched down and nailing wouldn't look nearly as monumental. "Poetic license." :puke:

13. not to mention, i've never seen anyone hammer with heavy gloves on.
they're more likely to make the hammer slip out of your hand, or miss the nail you're holding.

19. or at least eye protection?
The builders I've worked with -- even if they don't wear ear protection (hammer strikes can be very loud, +80 decibels though they only last a fraction of a second) -- have told me that safety glasses are a must, whenever metal is striking metal, e.g. a nail ...

Evacuees Find Housing Grants Will End Soon
By SHAILA DEWAN
New York Times

HOUSTON, April 21 Thousands of hurricane evacuees who counted on a year of free housing and utilities are being told by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that they are no longer eligible for such help and must either pay the rent themselves or leave.

Of about 55,000 families who were given long-term housing vouchers, nearly a third are receiving notices that they no longer qualify, FEMA officials said. For the rest, benefits are also being cut: they will have to sign new leases, pay their own gas and electric bills and requalify for rental assistance every three months.

The process has been marked by sharp disagreements between the agency and local officials, and conflicting information given to evacuees about their futures. Although agency officials say they never promised a full year of free housing, many local officials around the country say yearlong vouchers were exactly what FEMA agreed to provide. ...

In the desperate weeks after Hurricane Katrina, the vouchers helped stabilize the lives of evacuees who had bounced from place to place while trying to find missing family members and deal with mysterious skin rashes, shellshocked children and reams of red tape. At least, the vouchers promised, they would not have to worry about shelter. ...
