WASHINGTON, April 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement today after Bush Republicans in the House of Representatives rammed through changes gutting a lobbying reform package and filling it with partisan campaign restrictions.
"Almost one month ago, Republicans joined Democrats in the Senate to pass our lobbying reform bill based on the Democratic Honest Leadership Act. It wasn't perfect, but it went a long way towards making government serve the people, not the special interests. Today, Bush Republicans showed they are more interested in protecting lobbyists than reforming Congress. Instead of passing tough lobbying reform rules, Republicans gutted a lobbying reform bill, filled it with partisan campaign measures, and rammed the change through the House of Representatives. If the trial of Tom DeLay and prison terms for Jack Abramoff and Duke Cunningham don't convince the Bush Republican Party to clean up its act, Americans are beginning to wonder what will."
