Bush says National Anthem doesn't have same value in Spanish...
as in English.

He just said that Spanish people should learn to speak English, and learn to sing The National Anthem in Spanish.

My question: What is the "correct" language for The Lord's Prayer?

And how do you say in Spanish, "Fuck the Beaners. They don't vote for me anyway."

1. Aramaic for the Lord's Prayer
as that is the language Jesus spoke. It is very interesting to hear, and even more interesting to translate, as there is no mention of God as Father in the first line, which could be translated as "Oh Thou Who art my breath".

4. My Syrian Aramaic is a bit rusty. How's yours?
But then, the King James scribes worked under the threat of death
if each word on each page didn't please the king.

Translators could rule the world if they got organized.

7. *may be referring to the "remix" verison.which .sorry I agree with him
A remix to be released in June will contain several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration laws. Among them:

"These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws ... let's not start a war with all these hard workers, they can't help where they were born."

11. I said this on another thread, but it bears repeating
Imagine the Monkey visits, say, Ireland, or Italy, or let's not forget POLAND!!! And a bunch of little kids, all dressed up in national costume, come out and sing our national anthem in Gaelic, or Italian, or Polish....

I can just see the Faux reporters airing it, over and over, saying "AWWWWW!!! Isn't that CUUUUUUTE! And what a SWELL tribute to America's IMMIGRANT HERITAGE!" The 'good' heritage, that is...the northern European and Celtic varieties!

About the only ones who get any relief at all out of this GOP, Spanish-speaking-folks bashing exercise are the poor bastards from the Middle East and Southwest Asia!!! Hell, hate is apparently a fairly finite resource, and if they're busy hatin' on Juan and Raul, maybe Achmed and Faisal will catch a break!

12. I thought Bush said if you want to be a "citizen" you should learn English
Sorry, but if you want to be a citizen of a country you should have a reasonable grasp on the primary language.

I don't care what language you sing the national anthem in but I'm not going to fault him on the citizenship/English statement

24. I disagree. For me it depends on why and who you communicate to.
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 12:30 PM by Sapere aude
My grandmother never learned English and she became a citizen after emigrating from Italy. She never had to speak English much because of who she associated with. I don't see a real need to demand someone learn English. It helps to communicate with others here but I think it should remain a personal choice.

18. Here goes George putting his foot in his mouth
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 11:22 AM by nadinbrzezinski
since when is English the official language of the country? Lingua Franca (there I go with Latin) yes, but official... no...

By the way, this racism came back and bit the repukes in Cali after Proposition 97, which ahem passed but CANNOT be enforced. something about them treaties, chiefly Guadalupe Hidalgo, we have signed with Mexico... what is more... that was the reason MANY LEGAL IMMIGRANTS (like myself) applied for citizenship. We realized that if the racist won, we would be sent back where we came... if we were lucky. They may still do that.. but that is another kettle of fish.

By the way, is George aware that the Pledge was written by a red commie? Nah, don't tell him, or he might decide it is not American enough either.

23. If your native language is something different than English you will sing
in your native tongue. No song was written to be sung in only one language. Screw anyone who things otherwise IMHO.

26. I'm pretty sure your wrong
I think almost all songs are written to be song in 1 language. Or else the writers wouldn't go to all the trouble to arrange the entire composition the way they do. Since languages have different natural rhythms making a song that can be sung interchangeably in several languages is a major pain in the butt to the writer. This isn’t to say other artist can rearrange the music to other languages, but it’s my guess without such rearrangements many songs will sound pretty terrible in non-native languages.

that went with that old drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven" before they put Francis Scott Key's poem onto it?
