Contact: Ron Bonjean or Heidi Armstrong, 202-225-2800, both of the Office of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert

WASHINGTON, April 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) released the following statement regarding today's passage of H.R. 282, The Iran Freedom Support Act. The bill passed by a vote of 397-21.

"We are fighting the War on Terror on all fronts, and we understand that protecting American citizens from terrorism means keeping a watchful eye on nations like Iran. The United States and the international community should hold the Iranian government accountable for its behavior.

"This legislation sends the message that the United States stands firmly opposed to Iran's ambitions to acquire and develop nuclear weapons, and we urge them to stop participating in, planning, and pursuing international turmoil. It is our hope that the people of Iran can participate in a peaceful and stable Democracy."

3. It has, here is another article from Washington Times
The House yesterday overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan bill that toughens sanctions against Iran until the country dismantles its nuclear programs, with supporters saying the move is a "key component of our war on terror."

Lawmakers voted 397-21 for the Iran Freedom Support Act, created "to hold the current regime in Iran accountable for its threatening behavior and to support a transition to democracy in Iran."
The bill sends the message "the United States expects Iran to be a responsible member of the international community," said House Majority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican.

But opponents from both parties argued the bill undermines diplomacy and is a first step to war with Iran.

Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Republican, said the measure reminds him of a 1998 congressional resolution that called for regime change in Iraq, which he thinks was the first step to the "very unpopular, expensive" Iraq war.
