well, i like "my girl" and "tears of a clown" quite a lot, but i'm not sure smokey's catalogue holds up to ol' neil's. that guy's written some amazing stuff, political (ohio, southern man, rockin' in the free world) and not (old man, needle & the damage done, cinnamon girl, etc). and he did so over the course of 20 years, longevity which is awfully rare in music.

i haven't actually heard that new song, so i can't say whether or not it sucks. fwiw, i thought the melody & tune to "let's roll" were pretty listless, though i admired the sentiment.

as for "the left" - um, i guess i forgot to check in w/ mr young before setting my list of priorities, but to me a disastrous war of choice that's destablized the world while costing about $16k per american household so far (w/ this yr not yet funded - of course, its not like we're paying for it. china seems happy to buy out debt) ranks pretty high above steroids in sports (thank goodness selig decided not to honor bonds when he passes ruth - now there was a man of integrity).

but then again, i guess many of "us" on "the left" are doing a crap job of listening to young, ward churchill, michael moore, or whoever we're supposed to be represented by on any given day.

i hope the song will be good, b/c i like good music. if its bad, maybe it will rise to the sublime (if unintentional) hilarity of "bush was right" by The Right Brothers.

Smokey's longevity is measured by the fact that "My Girl" lasted 40 years. I really doubt anyone is gonna re-record "Ohio" or even "Cinnnamon Girl" any time soon.
The temporal nature of Young's work gives it a small shelf life (one of the reasons Barry Gordy opposed Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is that he knew politics is quicksilver)
I would argue that Smokey accomplished more politically than Young ever did, if only by breaking those gigantic barriers between the races.
I don't care what your color is, but every guy who has a girl has sunshine on a cloudy day. If he heard it, Shakespeare would kick himself for not doing it first
