Cleared by DNA, he's killed by traffic
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/04/28/cleared.killed.ap/index.html

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A man who spent 12 years in prison for murder before new DNA testing exonerated him last year was killed in a hit-and-run as he walked on the city's South Side.

Young had a lawsuit pending against the city and Cook County officials alleging false imprisonment and malicious prosecution. Officials have denied the allegations.

Chicago police said the hit-and-run was under investigation. No arrests had been made in the case Friday morning, police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said.

Bummer, a quarter of his life spent in prison for a crime he didn't commit and he didn't even get to see justice served. How can Cook County officials deny the charges of false imprisonment and malicious prosecution against him?

1. hit-and-run
Right. Because people get drilled by cars on the sidewalk all the time, and people leave accident scenes all the time, and there's no way this wasn't a dirty cop. Not a chance. Nope.

:sarcasm:

8. I live in Chicago, corruption capital of the Midwest, and...
I have to admit that that was the FIRST thing to cross my mind: hit-and-run, my ass. This is a sad, sad day for those who continually fight for justice!

10. It is certainly possible.

If Cook County deputies could arrange the escape of dangerous criminals in an effort to affect the primary election, then this hardly seems beyond them.

On the other hand, given the frequency with which drivers have been beaten to death or near death on the southside of Chicago over the past few years when stopping after hitting a pedestrian, would YOU stop? Five years ago I never thought I'd keep on trucking after hitting a pedestrian. But today, there is no way in heck I am stopping in the wrong area.

I don't think I'd run though. I'd call it in on my cell and ask for directions to the nearest police station for my safety.

The law requires that in order to be found guilty of these charges, Cook County officials would have had to have known that he was innocent and thrown him in jail anyway.

5. Yeah, But I'm Looking At It As A Matter...
of conscience rather than law. Not that that's how the county is looking at it. They should have settled.

4. this is a dupe
i'll say what i said in the other thread, it is mighty convenient for the authorities that some anonymous hit and runner took this dude out, now isn't it

hmmm, five thousand dollars to a contract killer or maybe tens or hundreds of thousands in compensation for the falsely convicted man, not such a tough choice, is it
