Did anyone else get an e-mail from Air America Radio |
|
Entitled "Please download this file!"
The body says it is an important patch for Windows and provides what looks like a link to a executable file.

Did you download it? (I wouldn't, but I'm careful about downloads!)

Never download an exe file. Go to the AAR site and see if there is any news. Or send their tech support an email questioning it.

4. Why would Air America radio |
|
be sending you an important patch for Windows?
Sounds fishy to me.

5. From airamericaplace.com - it is BAD - DELETE it |
|
from airamericaplace.com
If you get a spam e-mail from Air America Place board with a link to an executable file DELETE IT! The administrative staff of AAP will never send you such a message. However the "person(s)" exploiting a security flaw in the board software have no such compunction. We are working on a remedy for the situation, and ask that you all practice safe computing-- never click on .exe's, keep your firewall running and your virus software up to date. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

8. Someone wants you to download a very nasty virus, and... |
|
not only would I not download it, but I would forward the email, including all those undeciperable headers, to AA so they can try to assist tracking down who's doing this. They seem to be aware of the problem and might be able to use the headers to help.
You might not see all the headers without pressing some buttons on your email program, but this is what you're looking for. There could be more entries after "Received:" and they are the important ones:
Status: U Return-Path: <updates@updates.jimhightower.com> Received: from CTSG-WEB01.ctsg.com (<216.205.128.114>) by montgomery.mail.atl.earthlink.net (EarthLink SMTP Server) with ESMTP id 1dlNGH2ZD3Nl3qB0 for <xxx@mindspring.com>; Wed, 13 Apr 2005 15:38:11 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <13813952.1113421091759.JavaMail.SchedTaskAcct@CTSG-WEB01> Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005 15:38:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Jim Hightower Grassroots Action Network <updates@updates.jimhightower.com>
