" Jose Can You See?" | Spanish 'Star-Spangled Banner' Draws Ire
By LAURA WIDES-MUNOZ, Associated Press Writer Fri Apr 28, 8:04 AM ET

MIAMI - British music producer Adam Kidron says that when he came up with the idea of a Spanish-language version of the U.S. national anthem, he saw it as an ode to the millions of immigrants seeking a better life.

But in the week since Kidron announced the song — which features artists such as Wyclef Jean, hip-hop star Pitbull and Puerto Rican singers Carlos Ponce and Olga Tanon — it has been the target of a fierce backlash.

Some Internet bloggers and others are infuriated by the thought of "The Star-Spangled Banner" sung in a language other than English.

23. Jose, can you see?
Any dead flies on me?

If you do, take a few,

Then you'll have some, too.

3. They need to lighten up.
The original song lyrics was a drinking song:

To Anacreon in Heaven, where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron should be.
When this answer arrived from that jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle and flute no longer be mute,
I’ll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I’ll instruct you like me to entwine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’ vine."
(this is the first of six verses, the others can be found in the image below)

4. Wasn't it based on an old English drinking song? I think we were
fighting the English during the War of 1812, and we adopted their song. What a topsy-turvy world we live in!

7. I can't believe CNN is wasting poll space with this
I can't believe the president is wasting breath with this subject. Who gives a rats ass what language anybody sings it in, fer Christ sake!

Unfortunately, and I know this to be true from personal experience, there are some people in his base who are going "Hell yeah!" concerning Bush's comments about singing the anthem in English. This kinda crap is important to them.

to distract the Murkans from how badly they are being fucked over by Bushco. I can see Rove, looking skyward, saying "thanks lord for this welcome distraction, now if you can get some lesbian wiccans to burn an American flag, I will truly be thankful."

14. I LIKE La Marseillaise -- especially this verse:
Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you

:applause:

Udamnwellfuckinbetcha! (As my drill instructor used to say.)

That message is far more participative than one of a spectator lounging aboard an enemy vessel cutting deals with a crony.

We've become a nation of spectators. Only participants deserve democracy.

Viva La France!

it's done all the time and people don't go crazy. Personally hearing William Shatner sing Lucy In The Sky is far worse than any Spanish version of SPB
