5. A year and a half?
Gosh, that sounds like a really long deployment.

My son in law spent a year there, missed the birth of his first
daughter, 6 months old by the time he got home.

The Army usually deploys for 1 year, the Marines for 6 months.
Why so long? Not that 1 year or 6 months is 'a walk in the park'.

7. oh my....
just can't comprehend what'd I'd do in a situation like that. For the parents minded, I'd whack him with a baseball bat to his/hers knees to make him stay state side, before I'd let her or him go oft to the halliburton wallet war. oiy. omg.

sour times, to make you think like that.

I was going to say I hope he is able to regain his health when he returns, but that sounds too bad. I hope he can keep it there, but also hope he can regain it when he returns. It hurts for sure.

32. He is doing it for his mates
not his country. This is something that most outside the culture don't understand. Most soldiers, once they deploy, it ain't for mother, the American way, or apple pie... it is for his buddies... and may all come home in one piece.

40. Yes. Here we go again. And humans think we're the smartest animals.
It's really important to let your friend tell you how scared s/he is as often as s/he needs to. My friend didn't sleep through the night for 2 years and took her cell phone with her everywhere she went. She wouldn't even travel to areas where she didn't have cell coverage in case she was called by the Marines. It's a terrible way to live.

Best wishes to you and your friend.

Here's hoping this war is over soon and the criminals in the White House who sent our troops into Iraq pay for their crimes.

I can't help but wonder if he has any clue regarding the pain he has inflicted not only on the people themselves but their friends, families, etc. How does he even begin to sleep at night? Thank you for the kind wishes!

37. Keep strong, at least until David deploys
trust me, his mother will be crying.. hell I know how this feels, I sent a husband to this useless exercise, for the start of this mess. Thankfully he is now retired, but I dread a reactivation letter every time I open our mail box... he was deployed on September 11... and in fact one of the first units on station... and less than a year later I sent him to that mess... why I fear oppening my mail box every day.

Now prayers, and one thing you can do is get his APO, military adress.. and send him the necessities of life taht the army ain't really providing. Oh and Mail is a great bosst to troops
