Sometimes no happy endings. Steve Howe, Dodgers pitcher, dead at 48

Suspended 7 times for substance abuse, the poster child for drug abuse in baseball in the pre-steroid era. Killed in an auto accident. His car left the road, and he was ejected (wear your seat belts). Transcends sports. A fabulous talent, but a tragic story. Sorry to be a downer.

1. RIP Steve Howe
Tragic end to a tragic life. Yes I realize he was probably much better off financially than a lot of us, but this guy was a good pitcher who just could not stay away from drugs. And that is tragic. I hate to see such talent wasted.

3. He had a great arm. Shame his personal life was so screwed up.
IIRC his fastball clocked in the upper nineties.

4. Sad, but not surprising.

He had a pretty destructive personality. Obviously.

His life would make an interesting book or movie.

5. He was given so many chances to "clean up his act", by MLB.
But his demons got the best of him.
Very sad!

6. I'll remember Steve as the flame throwing rookie of the year

who tallied 17 saves in 1980, breaking Joe Black's 1952 club rookie record for saves. The first-year also notched seven wins with a 2.65 ERA, and was awarded Rookie of the Year honors at the close of the season, beating out Bill Gullickson of the Expos.
Yeah, he had his demons but who doesn't. Thanks Steve for the memories.
