Fitzgerald to Seek Indictment of Rove
By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report

Friday 28 April 2006

Despite vehement denials by his attorney who said this week that Karl Rove is neither a "target" nor in danger of being indicted in the CIA leak case, the special counsel leading the investigation has already written up charges against Rove, and a grand jury is expected to vote on whether to indict the Deputy White House Chief of Staff sometime next week, sources knowledgeable about the probe said Friday afternoon.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was in Chicago Friday and did not meet with the grand jury.

Luskin was informed via a target letter that Fitzgerald is prepared to charge Rove for perjury and lying to investigators during Rove’s appearances before the grand jury in 2004 and in interviews with investigators in 2003 when he was asked how and when he discovered that Valerie Plame Wilson worked for the CIA, and whether he shared that information with the media.

If the grand jury returns an indictment Rove would become the second White House official - and one of the most powerful political operatives in the country - charged in the case since the leak investigation began in the fall of 2003.

In the event that an indictment is handed up by the grand jury it would be filed under seal. A press release would then be issued by Fitzgerald’s press office indicating that the special prosecutor will hold a news conference, likely on a Friday afternoon, sources close to the case said. The media would be given more than 24 hours notice of a press conference, sources added.

Luskin was at his office when called for comment but his assistant said he would not take the call or comment on this story.

1. Luskin would have served Rove better with "No Comment" all along
Luskin must be as dumb as Bush and about as competent.

26. I knew that Jason's story earlier this week was true just for that reason
- Who is Jason Leopold in the world of DC politics? I love his writing but for Luskin to respond to his article earlier this week sent alarm bells off in my head.

Yep Luskin has said too much and this is not the first time this has happened with him.

109. Methinks Luskin might be deliberately playing it stupid so that Rove
can appeal any conviction and get it overturned based on attorney incompetence.

I put NOTHING past these people.

11. Too bad! This means that Rove is blockading the investigation--in
addition to Libby. Unless Rove changes his mind this week, and decides to cooperate. Still could happen. And they we'll begin to see justice done--because Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice did this, ordered the outing of our own CIA agent and an entire CIA WMD counter-proliferation network, putting all the covert agents and contacts at risk of getting killed, and disabling all their counter-proliferation projects. Libby and Rove would never have done this on their own. This is an impeachment matter--concerning which Libby and Rove are lying and obstructing justice.

That's what I mean by "too bad." I'm certainly not sorry to see Rove indicted. His very name is a synonym for injustice and for lying. But I want the perps and traitors who ordered it caught, and exposed for the criminals THEY are. I want the people who hold the reigns of power in this country--the people most RESPONSIBLE for this and other outrages--to pay for their crimes.

14. PP: I remain optimistic because Fitzgerald's modus operandi
has consistently been to comprehensively detail and gather evidence against underlings, and proceed to see the larger, more important crimes and their perpetrators brought to justice.

I hope to see our wish that the true criminals are brought to justice fulfilled.

I think Rove has plenty of dirt on plenty of people and he's too high profile to be suicided. I also think when the cards are truly down, he will sell everyone, up to and including his mother, to keep his hide safe.

19. Getting Champagne ready - it all makes sense....
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 10:10 PM by stop the bleeding
In recent weeks, sources close to the case said, Fitzgerald's staff has met with Rove's legal team several times to discuss a change in Rove's status in the case - from subject to target - based on numerous inconsistencies in Rove's testimony, whether he discussed Plame Wilson with reporters before her name and CIA status were published in newspaper reports, and whether he participated in a smear campaign against her husband.

The meetings between Luskin and Fitzgerald which took place on several occasions a few weeks ago were called to discuss a timeframe to schedule a return to the grand jury by Rove to testify about, among other things, 250 pages of emails that resurfaced February 6 from Vice President Dick Cheney's office and the Office of President Bush in which Rove wrote to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card about strategizing an attack against Wilson, sources familiar with the case said.

~snip~

However, grand jury testimony by at least a dozen administration officials have portrayed Rove as a key player in a campaign to destroy Ambassador Wilson's credibility in Washington, DC, sources familiar with several of the witnesses' testimony said.

Notice the timing of the Luskin/Fitz meetings in reference to Bolton's arrival/Card's departure - Card is going to be indicted here in the not to distant future or cop a deal. Also notice in the last paragraph how Rove is A key player not the key player, meaning there are more players to be scene in this play. Like Card, Rice, Darth and Shrub. This is awesome I was hoping for a late Friday newsdump.

Thank you kpete and thank you Jason

84. I do too
Remember Gonzales was the one first notified that the Justice Department had opened an investigation into the outing of Joseph Wilson’s wife. He got the call at 8:30 pm and then told Andy Card. But then it took them 12 more hours to inform the White House staff that they needed to preserve all relevant documents.

250 emails show up in February. In March, Card resigns.

also jibes with the removal of Scotty -- they needed someone new as the Press Secretary to handle what was coming down the pipe with Fitz. Who better than a direct feed to the FAUX propaganda machine? With an indictment of Rove and the exposure of the participation of others, including Cheney, the WH is going to need 24/7 FAUX treatment to massage the masses.

I hope he's got the goods to back up his stories, I hope regardless of his background he is right on these stories.

We can also hope that the good folks at Truthout care about their credibility and that it's editors and producers are satisfied that Leopold's sources are good.

Generally, I think all stories with un-named sources should be considered with some skepticism.

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0210/S00084.htm

and this:

http://villagevoice.com/news/0508,murphy,61336,6.html

and this:

http://www.newsmedianews.com/jason_leopold2.php

And I'll leave you with a quote from page 28 of his new book:

"In my opinion, as long as you are the first one who reports the news, you own the story. It doesn't really matter how you get it. Other journalists will whine about ethics, but that's a load of crap."

72. As reliable as religion
It all depends on what you want to believe.
Mr. Leopold has been throwing a whole of mud on the wall recently in regard to this investigation. Sooner or later some is bound to stick.
As for my "religion": I'll say it again. This investigation has been leak-proof. I don't believe anyone, outside of the Fitz team, has any real idea at all of what will happen.
As for Mr. Leopold's latest "scoop", the critical modifier in the story is:

"If the grand jury returns an indictment Rove would become the second White House official - and one of the most powerful political operatives in the country - charged in the case since the leak investigation began in the fall of 2003."

So, Leopold will look correct either way. Next!

after he finished speaking to a college audience, a very intelligent student came up to shake hands with Minister Malcolm. She said how impressed she was with what he had to say, although she didn't believe everything he said. Malcolm grinned and said, "But you will, Sister. Soon enough."

Chief of Staff....and getting nearer to President Nixon.

Opps, I mean Andy Card, Presidential Chief of Staff and President Bush. Funny, the similarity must have caused that little freudian slip.

This sure explains the Bolton appointment, Card's retirement and Rove's demotion, doesn't it?

Looks like more indictments after Rove must be imminent, doesn't it? And the Cancer is creeping ever closer to the President.

112. Apparently the Press Office was involved...
In the smearing of Ambassador Wilson and in leaking the identity of his wife, undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. That would include McClellen as well as sporadic spokesperson Dan Bartlett.

But the central group who apparently made and implemented the decision to go after Wilson (or were instructed by Bush/Cheney to do so) were the members of the White House Iraq Group (WHIG). That was Karl Rove, Andy Card, Karen Hughes, Mary Matalin, James R. Wilkerson, Nicholas E. Calio, Condoleeza Rice, Stephen Hadley, and I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby.

55. I'd say those 250 'missing' emails cooked Rove's goose
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 06:16 AM by npincus
as for revealing the depth and breadth of his involvement with the Wilson smear campaign, AND his effort to obstruct the investigation by hiding them. How the HELL could he possibly explain 250 missing emails?... ESPECIALLY if the msising emails were not chronologically sequenced... in other words, emails that were cherry-picked for their content (rather than just 250 emails sent/received sequentially winthin a given timeframe). I don't see HOW Rove could explain suddenly 'finding' these-- like they were hidden under the rug-- to Fitz's satisfaction.

This is great... but I'm tired of being led to the banquet, and then having the food pulled away. I'll try to be patient in the coming days.

"..in which Rove wrote to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card about strategizing an attack against Wilson.."

Andrew Card (indicted for leaking the name) and Karl Rove (indicted for conspiracy and obstruction of justice).

I haven't seen speed from him though, and I don't expect that will change. So, honestly, while in the big picture, he may well put this whole administration behind bars, it may be later than we need. We need to focus on a Democratic House and Senate for 2006 and call what Fitz does just wonderful gravy.
