Judge Alito Proves a Powerful Match for Senate Questioners

<snip>

By ADAM LIPTAK and ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: January 11, 2006
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 - If Senate Democrats had set out to portray Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. as extreme on issues ranging from abortion to government surveillance of citizens, they ran up against an elusive target on Tuesday: Samuel A. Alito Jr. For nearly eight hours, Judge Alito was placid, monochromatic and, it seemed, mostly untouchable.

Unlike the testimony of John G. Roberts Jr., who had often declined to answer questions on various grounds, among them that certain issues might come before him as chief justice or that his older writings did not necessarily reflect his current views, Judge Alito's default impulse frequently seemed to be to try to give a direct response to the senators' often rambling questions.

Failing that, he offered what he presented as clarifications of earlier statements or writing, sanded of any rough edges, or said he simply could not recall details about some past chapter of his life that had raised concern among senators. Only in one exchange did he appear rattled, refusing to give a direct answer when Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York asked him if he still held a view, expressed in 1985, that there was no constitutional right to abortion.

For the most part, his handling of questions from Democrats had the effect of leaving his questioner shuffling through papers in search of the next question.

-Lots more crap where this came from-

6. It really doesn't matter
This clown Alito was confirmed long before the hearings started. Done deal.

We can only hope that one or two of the republicans on the Supreme Court don't live very long, or that the GOP scandal machine somehow the Supreme Court. Now, wouldn't THAT be something?

I stopped reading the NY Times a while ago.

5. What I don't understand is the media reaction----
Well, I understand they are bought and paid for-- but I saw a man who couldn't weasel himself out of a question without help from a friendly Senator. I saw someone who wouldn't answer any question forthrightly, I saw someone who was NOT qualified to be a SS Justice. Everyone in the media said, "nothing today that would disqualify him."

I evidently am not on the same planet as the rest of the world! Alito looked weak and wanting when pressured in the least. NOT SSJ material!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

7. Crank On Your Local Salem Hate Radio Station...
There's plenty being said there. One goon...Hugh Hewitt is being paid, fed and who knows what else by the RNC to broadcast direct from the hearings and get the unadulterated spin and bullshit out as it happens.

From what I've been hearing, the wingnuts are happy how things are going. Alito hasn't spit up on himself and no pubic hair on a coke can yet. They've been all salivating over Ted Kennedy and re-living Chappaquiddick for the umpteenth time. These goons are convinced this guy is gonna overturn Roe and ram it up our asses and they couldn't be happier. The meme has been that this is the last "librul" bastion about to fall and that's why we're screaming like stuck pigs...our "last throes".
