I just attended a Holocaust memorial
I live in Michigan and there is a small Jewish Temple in my town, Temple Israel, that often funds local charities and is very active on liberal issues. They often fund anti-racist speakers, cultural events, environmentalism ect. Today they rented out the local art gallery to show Jewish artwork and also the pictures and story of the concentration camps and the Final Solution. They also rented out the local theatre to give a free showing of Hotel Rwanda to educate people on current genocides. The exhibit was absolutely horrible. I have watched Schindler's List and read about the Holocaust before but to see the things they did to these people, the medical experiments ect was just horrible. I think everyone should have to see what happened there. The thing that disturbed me most is that when reading the propaganda the Nazis spread about the Jews, I realized that much of that prejudice is still around right in the US today. The myth that Jews own the media and Hollywood, Jews murdered Jesus, Jews are cheap, Jews steal and are all rich ect. It's sad something like that happened and people still profess these beliefs. Just last week Nazis rallied in Lansing...very sad.

3. It's really great that people and organizations still have these memorials
since many of those with memories of the Holocaust have died or, sad to say, will not be able to educate the next generation. It's important to keep the memory alive both to honor those who perished and to warn the world about ongoing and potential events of mass murder.

4. Coincidentally, I just saw a most inspirational movie last night about
a Holocaust memorial in Whitwell, TN, of all places. It was called "Paperclips", a documentary that won an award for one of the best documentaries in 2004.

<snip> Whitwell, TN is a small, rural community of less than two thousand people nestled in the mountains of Tennessee. Its citizens are almost exclusively white and Christian. In 1998, the children of Whitwell Middle School took on an inspiring project, launched out of their principal's desire to help her students open their eyes to the diversity of the world beyond their insulated valley. What happened would change the students, their teachers, their families and the entire town forever… and eventually open hearts and minds around the world.

We watched it last night with our kids and it was truly uplifting and a testament to the difference a commited group of kids and educators can make in the world. I heartily recommend it! Do yourself a favor and check it out, you won't be disappointed.

:hi:
