Why does the Bush administration feel it is above the law?
Kiril Dickinson

Contributing Writer

January 09, 2006

So what do you suppose George Bush is really up to? I only ask because nothing he has said so far has made any sense.

I'm referring, of course, to the revelation that he has ordered the National Security Agency to spy upon Americans illegally, without a warrant. The idea behind warrants is that no one person in our egalitarian society has absolute power to decide what is, or is not, against the law. We call it democracy, although purists call it a republic. In any case, we have set up a system whereby we elect people to pass laws and everyone has to follow them or be thrown in jail. Unless you are Republican.

If you are Republican, you can just do whatever the hell you want.

....

Because he is Republican, Mr. Bush can do whatever he wants, since Republicans control every lever of government. Less than a decade ago, lawmakers apparently thought it was an impeachable offense to have a president who had an affair and didn't want to talk about it. Now we have a person in the White House who routinely breaks the law to spy on whomever he chooses. Where are those Republicans now? Why, to a surprising degree, they are still sitting in Congress. And why are they allowing this criminal behavior to continue? Because they are Republicans. And to keep the money coming in, they have to keep every branch of the government in Republican hands, lest some unpatriotic Democratic cabal decide to ask exactly what they hell is going on.

1. Are the sheeple waking up?
People I've talked to are mad about the spying thing. And I'm talking about folks who usually aren't political.

2. WOW...
That is shocking, coming from a South Alabama college paper. I received my Master from the University of South Alabama, and I can promise that cutting edge left, they are NOT! Yeah! A voice of region in a heavily red area of the country!! Go Jags!

3. Because...
the public is willing to let him be above the law. A new Washington Post Poll shows over 60% of the public is again willing to give up some of their liberties for security. That's why he thinks he's above the law.

8. As somebody on this board said a few days ago...
Any government above the law is a dictatorship. Do Republicans want a dictatorship?

some kind of problem with your paperwork...looks like you'll have to reapply for admission...Oh, and until that's straightened out, "Karl Jr." from the College Republicans will be Acting Editor.

16. Excellent editorial
I submitted a positive comment. Isn't nice when someone writes such lucid, direct prose pointing out the truth that you see so clearly but that almost always gets ignored?

By the way, Kiril Dickinson was named "Best Columnist in the Southeastern region" in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards in 2004. (The second place winner, Michael P. Gregory, was also from the Univ. of South Ala. Apparently they have a quite a program there!)

17. Current political stalemate in D.C. looks like the PRI in Mexico
which was virtual one one party rule for almost 70-something years if I'm not mistaken...and look where that hotbed of corruption and incompetence has landed them.

Dissent from a loyal opposition is to be respected and taken into consideration. The United State's national loyalty always was to the most pragmatic elements, not the obvious corrupt and incompetent elements, of which we are seeing the fruits of their labors today.

19. WVA had a Scathing Article the Other Day Against Bush
and this administration. It's online, according to a relative. Don't have the link but she read it to me the other day from work.

We're not so divided after all. I think most Americans are sincerely fed-up.
