The first few jokes were innocent... then Stephen opened fire with both barrels and started clowning Bush & Co and the Press and Scalia and others...
Those folks in the audience looked incredulous.

22. I guess they were in shock........ |

nervous actually, afraid to laugh because Colbert so thoroughly spanked BushCo. Everyone knows Georgie doesn't like criticism and they walk on eggshells when they're around him so as not to draw his famous temper out. Screw 'em. Colbert tore the entire facade off the Bush regime in one felled swoop.
Colbert artfully showed that the Emperor truly has no clothes and people just couldn't handle the avalanche of truth.

made them uncomfortable. Colbert was brilliant. People laughed, a lot of nervous laughter, but he was skewering to the bone and the press was much the target as Bush.

BECAUSE- although the audience expected comedy, Colbert spoke truth to the power sitting in the room. It was absolutely BRILLIANT. Suddenly, every one was naked. You MUST watch it in the c-span archives when it becomes available there. YOU, in particular, will LOVE it. BHN

14. Colbert, the Hero, used his MOMENT to crucify bush. It wasn't about being |
|
FUNNY, it was about seizing the absolutely right moment in US history to publicly humiliate the liar in chief and the idiotic, moronic freaks who sold out and who support the bush regime.
Colbert fell on the sword to give his voice to the American People.... There is no greater hero.

The audience was laughing a lot, just not loudly...twitters, so to speak. Because Steven Colbert was NOT afraid to say, to *'s face yet, what the writing and talking heads KNOW that they themselves should be doing this. Bravos, encores, flowers to Steven Colbert, wielder of rapier and bludgeon! BTW, I think the use of Mr. Bridges, *'s double, may have backfired.

Given how thin * and the power elite are, someone will get whacked, I'm sure. What did they expect. You hire a dissident comedian and you suddenly expect him to behave like the sycophants they are used to?
