2. it's painfully obvious that people are starving for the truth |
|
the fact that someone had the balls to stand up and say irreverent, truthful things IS news. The sheer non-reporting of the events that we all WANT to see covered is endemic of the apathy and fear that has been envoked in our press. For anyone to challenge the status quo,in this administration's atmosphere of intimidation is news.My advice to you-create something more interesting to read than these threads, and ignore them.I don't understand your hostility towards what was intended to be a positive post.

4. I wasn't looking for funny, I was looking for someone who had.. |
|
the guts to tell the President and the Press to WAKE UP and tell the truth.
That's the big deal.

13. FYI...Colbert's rhetoric is a valid style of poltical discourse |
|
I recently heard a presentation from on political discourse from M. Cathleen Kaveny, University of Notre Dame. She reviewed two main types: casuistry and prophetic. The former relies mostly on facts and reason to find solutions. The other is a more emotional, my way or the highway way of looking at things. Those both on the right and left practice each. And most people mix them based on the issue. However, Joe SixPack, who doesn't live in Washington or even care what goes on there, tunes a lot of this out. Rush Minions don't; they eat that prophetic discourse right up.
Then there are people who are not really that political--and this is a lot of people. They do not care normally, they might care but do not see any difference in the way politicians act or speak. When they vote, they vote based on family history or the lessor of two evils. For them, there is another form of political discourse--the ironic. This has a broader, popular appeal. Often, one finds this in comedic settings. Dr. Kaveny actually used The Daily Show and The Colbert Report as examples of ironic discourse. Many people who might otherwise do so, do NOT tune out this ironic form of discourse. Now, Dr. Kaveny considers this to be a valid form of political discourse, as do many of her peers. It appeals to people who might otherwise ignore what goes on. So let him speak out.

"If all that John Stewart had done in his life was give Stephen Colbert to do what he did to George Bush last night, his life is already justified a million times. Colbert is the Edward Murrow of our generation, speaking the truth when every else is too scared or too comfortable or too in denial. Colbert=patriot. I love him. Thanks Colbert, Stewart and Comedy Central!"
