Bush Has Ignored 750 Laws - this logic is incredible
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 12:05 PM by leftyladyfrommo
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2006/04/30/bush_c

Why do we keep finding out more and more things that this adm. has simply ignored because it didn't like it?

This is the wierdest logic I have seen yet. They just set aside any laws that Congress has made that they don't like?

Am I going nuts?

17. I'm kicking this - its important, I think.
I don't understand why this isn't more disturbing to more people. Is it just one more thing?

18. I just cannot understand the logic
of the american people to stand still and let this jerk override us and the Constitution. There are people in other parts of the world who are fighting for a democracy and we are just throwing it away, turning a blind eye, we thought it could never happen to us, but it is, and what are going to do about it?

3. Can he ignore, say, election fraud laws?
or laws that stop him from jailing political opponents? Welcome to fascism.

6. This bothered me for hours after I read it
I tried to put down in words the numerous reasons why I think it sends us into a Constitutional Crisis:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1064497

But if noone is aware - is it a crisis? Of course it is - but somehow we are just learning now?

you are not going nuts. This is huge. The rate of his signing statements is one every three days. Think about that.

8. This really, really bothers me ,too.
Along with all the other stuff they are doing that bothers me.

I just wish we would get these guys stopped. I don't even care how anymore. They just need to be stopped before we don't have a country left.

10. Please comment on my thread
I try to lay out how serious this is - on multiple levels.

I honestly think that even those on the Hill had no idea how often Bush was using this 'signing statement' trick. It appears, from the article, that only academics who have followed this narrow area have paid attention to the govt document sources where these are filed, and thus have info per the specifics.

I hope, but do not know/count on, that this is the first story of many - that it sets off a digging expedition into the specifics of all of these examples of extra-constitutional activities. What is the content of the statements. How often have the statements dictated policy and which policy - and how often were they simply symbolic. If they are symbolic - no big deal - but given the pattern of secretive governance of this administration I would doubt that most are simply symbolic.

14. I am in agreement. I think this is abhorent.
And why isn't Congress on this? It is their laws that are simply being ignored?

Why isn't this Page One NYT?

I have no answers. It's like there is this huge conspiracy of silence right now. Is it because everyone is so afraid of these guys? I don't know. But I do think we will look back at these times and see just how easily we could have lost our democracy. Just how fragile our freedoms really are.

We have the most piss poor excuse for a Congress right now.

20. I'm beginning to wonder.
Have we become a people that are so afraid that we will just let anyone walk over the top of us?

I just get this complacency.

13. Apparently B#$h flunked constitutional law
Why does he think he has the power to ignore a law if he believes it to be unconstitutional. That is not part of his job description. This is why we have a Constitution. This is why we have a Congress!
