Protest music breaking out all over the place
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 02:04 PM by tgnyc
The Bush era will be known as the latest great era of protest music. Check out the excerpts...

FROM ROCK

"SWEET NEO-CON" – The Rolling Stones
You call yourself a Christian
I think that you're a hypocrite
You say you are a patriot
I think that you're a crock of shit

"LET’S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT" – Neil Young
Let's impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected

"BUSHLEAGUER" – Pearl Jam
He’s not a leader, he’s a Texas Leaguer
Swinging for the fence, got lucky with a strike
Drilling for fear, makes the job simple
Born on third, thinks he got a triple

FROM HIP-HOP

"BIN LADEN" – Immortal Technique
This shit is run by fake Christians, fake politicians
Look at their mansions, then look at the conditions you live in
All they talk about is terrorism on television
They tell you to listen, but they don't really tell you their mission

"CAN’T HOLD US BACK" – Public Enemy
Even if some got de-rebelized
The revolution will still not be televised
US government telling hella lies
And it’s evident when you look in this president’s devil eyes

"GEORGE BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE" – The Legendary K.O.
(regarding Katrina)
Niggas starvin' and they dyin' of thirst
Bet he had to go and check the refineries first
Making a killin' off the price of gas
He woulda been up in Connecticut twice as fast

FROM COUNTRY

"NOT READY TO MAKE NICE" – Dixie Chicks
(regarding threats following their insulting of Bush)
I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

"WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PEACE ON EARTH?" – Willie Nelson
And the bewildered herd is still believing
Everything we’ve been told from our birth
Hell they won’t lie to me
Not on my own damn TV
But how much is a liar’s word worth

"REBUILD AMERICA FIRST" – Merle Haggard
Yeah, men in position but backing away
Freedom is stuck in reverse
Let's get out of Iraq and get back on the track
And let's rebuild America first

FROM POP

"WHERE IS THE LOVE" – Black Eyed Peas
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
(SNIP)
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends

"DEAR MR. PRESIDENT" – Pink
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

1. And a new tool album on Tuesday...
...which sounds from the singles to be political in TOOL's patently philosphical manner.

5. No. It's time for another approach and not a Woodstock part 4 or whatever
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 02:21 PM by YOY
I say a real concert protest in DC. With the numbers of last year's minus the A.N.S.W.E.R BS. Real performers and not some guy I've never heard of who is hear to whine about Mumia.

This ain't about peace and love anymore it's about soberly doing the right damn thing.

Keep it tight, focused. Not a sprawling free-for-all which descends into drunken chaos.

A REAL Woodstock II, not the pale commercial immitations that they've had.

I think Bruce Springsteen tried to get something like that started before the election on the Vote For Change Tour, but those were just in concert halls, where from outsider's points of views, they were just like other concerts, and didn't affect much anyone else. Something of the magnitude of the previous Woodstock, with all of it's expected and unexpected nuances, with just about every band that has a decent protest song or two joining in would be awesome!

The problem you had with the Vote For Change tour is that you really didn't have a nucleus of NEW protest songs to play at those either. NOW we do! Pink, Steve Earle, Dave Rovics, John Fogerty, Neil Young, etc. would just rock! Bring in Joan Baez and others too.
- Perhaps have a brief reunification of what's still around for CSNY. Dave Crosby just put out a lot of words of support for Neil Young's efforts now. Maybe they can talk Steven Stills and Graham Nash to come too.
- I could see even Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry also reuniting with a new rendition of "Won't Get Fooled Again!".
- Maybe Country Joe could rewrite "Fixin' to Die" rag as well and play it.
- Symbolman shows up playing "Secret Agent Plame".
- System of a Down and Michael Moore with "BOOM!"
- John Cougar Mellencamp with "To Washington" and "Pink Houses"
- "I'm the Decider" from the Real Baby Jesus
- Thompson Twins come in and sing, "Lies, Lies, Lies!", "Don't Mess with Dr. Dean" (updated "Don't Mess with Dr. Dream") and "Judy Do" (with lyrics tailored towards Judith Miller)
- Gordon Lightfoot comes in and sings a nice ballad about the Valerie Plame and other secret messes with a rewritten version of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to be "Talk to Sibel Edmonds, Fitzgerald!".
- a moment of silence for Edwin Starr ("War!") who died a day or so before the Iraq War started.
- Carlos Santana to play "Soul Sacrifice" and his newer "Mountains to Flatten, Valleys to Fill".
- And to top it off, have a satellite fed broadcast from London of Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam today) playing his newer rendition of "Peace Train", if Bushco won't allow him the country again. Maybe have 10,000 Maniacs play along with him locally here.

Janis and Jimi would be turning over in their graves! One can only dream!

6. May I add
also one of the unknown bands. Just happens to be my son's band in NYC. If you want to take a minute listen to their song Tyme, my son wrote it 2 years ago and has played it in many places in NYC, including CBGB, and recently the ANZAC festival in which they were the only American band.

TYME- Shotgun Wedding

13. Like to add
Queensryche's "I'm American" from Operation Mindcrime II.

One might also consider Jason Mraz's "The Remedy." It's a pop song with some very serious undertones...

I saw fireworks from the freeway and behind closed eyes I cannot make them go away
Cause you were born on the fourth of july, freedom ring
Now something on the surface it stings
That something on the surface it kind of makes me nervous who says that you deserve this
And what kind of God would serve this? we will cure this dirty old disease
If you’ve got the poison I’ve got the remedy

The remedy is the experience. it is a dangerous liaison
I say the comedy is that it’s serious. which is a strange enough new play on words
I say the tragedy is how you’re gonna spend the rest of your nights with the light on
So shine the light on all of your friends because it all amounts to nothing in the end.

I wont worry my life away.
I wont worry my life away.

I heard two men talking on the radio in a cross fire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
They were counting down the days to stab the brother in the be right back after this
The unavoidable kiss, where the minty fresh death breath is sure to outlast his catastrophy

14. A few more...
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 04:10 PM by calipendence

FROM ROCK

"WE SHALL OVERCOME" - Bruce Springsteen
We Shall Overcome - Bruce Springsteen
We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome some day

"MRS. MCGRATH" - Bruce Springsteen
All foreign wars I do proclaim
Between Don John and the King of Spain
I'd rather have my son as he used to be
Than the King of America and his whole navy.
With your too-ri-a, fol-di-diddle-da, too-ri, oor-ri, oor-ri-a
With your too-ri-a, fol-di-diddle-da, too-ri, oor-ri, oor-ri-a

"WHEN THE PRESIDENT TALKS TO GOD" - Bright Eyes
When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?
I doubt it
I doubt it

"MARY SHUT THE GARDEN DOOR" - Donald Fagen
(Paranoia blooms when a thuggish cult gains control of the government)
They came in under the radar
When our backs were turned around
In a fleet of Lincoln Town Cars
They rolled into our town
Confounded all six senses
Like an opiate in the brain
Mary shut the garden door
Looks a lot like rain
Mary shut the garden door
Mary shut the garden door

"WORLDWIDE SUICIDE" - Pearl Jam
It's a shame to awaken, world aflame
What does it mean when the war has taken over?
It's the same everyday and the wave won't break
Tell you to pray, while the devil's on their shoulder
The whole world...
Will now burn...
Yeah, it's a world wide suicide

"WEEKEND SOLDIER" - Gus Black
I'm a soldier of Tennessee
Just a weekend soldier on a killing spree
The alcohol by the sea
Just a pleasant Sunday killing spree
Just look and you'll find
I don't know this thing
Just look and you'll find
who's free

FROM COUNTRY

"TAKIN' MY COUNTRY BACK" - Honky Tonkers for Truth
Country music's got mammas and daddys,
they got bar rooms and old heartbreak songs,
but I'm here today to stand up and say how I feel about my home sweet home,
what's left, what's right and what's wrong.
'N I'm takin' my country back.
Son, you ain't been doin' her right.
Oh, I been watchin' you and I don't like how you been treatin' my stars and stripes.
You took out our jobs and sent 'em over-seas;
now we owe billions to the red Chinese.
You blew the budget and you bounced Iraq.
So I'm takin' my country back.

"POLITICALLY UNCORRECT" - Gretchen Wilson (wi. Merle Haggard)
I'm for the low man on the toedom pole
And I'm for the underdog god bless his soul
And I'm for the guys still pulling third shift
and the single mom raising her kids
And I'm for the preacher who stay on their knees
And I'm for the sinner who finally believed
And I'm For the farmer with dirt on his hands
And the soldiers who fight for this land
And I'm for the bible
And I'm for the flag
And I'm for the working man
Me and Ol' hag
I'm just one of many who can't get no respect
Politically Uncorrect
I guess my opinion is all out of style
Don't get me started because i can get wild
And I'll make a fight for the four father's plan (That's Right)
Hell the world already knows where I stand

18. Have some I would like to add:
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 06:48 PM by EOO
Queensryche - I'm American
If you voted for the man you're wasting time
He's got his fingers dipped in everyone's pie
The news cant wait to promote all the
bullshit that the government is selling

Queensryche - Speak To Me
Seven years of power
the corporation claw
The rich control the government, the media the law
To make some kind of difference
Then everyone must know
Eradicate the fascists, revolution will grow
The system we learn says we're equal under law
But the streets are reality, the weak and poor will fall
Let's tip the power balance and tear down the crown
Educate the masses, we'll burn the White House down

KMFDM - WWIII

I declare war on the axis of morons
All out war on complacent consent
I declare war on the war against drugs
Rape and Slaughter of the innocent

War on big brother
Warmongers and profiteers
War on your dogma dubya
Armageddon's engineers

War in a heartbeat
I declare war on so-called civilization
World trade globalization
Organized disinformation

Dream Theater - In The Name Of God
How can this be?
Why is he the chosen one?
Saint gone astray
In the mighty and the strong
With a scepter and a gun

Dream Theater - Sacrificed Sons
Heads all turning
Towards the sky
Towers crumble
Heroes die

Who would wish this
On our people
And proclaim
That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
All praise their Sacrificed sons
All praise their Sacrificed sons

Frank Zappa - Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk
Robertson says that he's The One
Oh he sure is, if Armageddon
Is your idea of family fun,
An' he's got some planned for you!
(Now, tell me that ain't true)

Give me that old time religion!

Now, what if Jimbo's slightly gay,
Will Pat let Jimbo get away?
Everything we've heard him say
Indicates that Jim must pay,
(And it just might hurt a bit) Just a bit!
But keep that money rollin' in,
'Cause Pat and naughty Jimbo
Can't get enough of it (let's dance!)

Frank Zappa - Heavenly Bank Account
He's got twenty million dollars
In his Heavenly Bank Account . . .
All from those chumps who was
Born again
Oh yeah, oh yeah

He's got seven limousines
And a private plane . . .
All for the use of his
Special Friends
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Frank Zappa - Dumb All Over
Anyway, listen.
We can't really be dumb
If we're just following God's Orders
After all He wrote this book here
An' in the book it says:
"He made us all to be just like Him," so . . .
If we're dumb . . .
Then God is dumb . . .
(An' maybe even a little ugly on the side)

24. James McMurtry, "Can't Make It Here" (country)
FROM COUNTRY

"CAN'T MAKE IT HERE" -- James McMurtry (son of Larry
McMurtry -- http://jamesmcmurtry.com)

and there's more comin' home from the Mideast war
we can't make it here anymore

That big old buildin' was a textile mill,
fed our kids an' it paid our bills, but they
turned us out an' they closed the doors
we can't make it here anymore

(snip)

there's a high school girl with a bou'geois dream
just like the pictures in a magazine /
she found on the floor of a laundry-mat
a woman with kids can forget all that
when she comes up pregnant, what'll she do?
fergit the career, and fergit about school
Can she live on faith? Live on hope?
High on Jesus or hooked on dope /
when it's way too late to just say no
we can't make it here anymore

(snip)

Should I hate a people for the shade of their skin
or the shape of their eyes, or the shape I'm in?
Should I hate 'em fer havin' our jobs today?
no I hate the men sent the jobs away...

I can see 'em all now, they haunt my dreams, all
lily white and squeaky clean

They'll never know want, they'll never know need
Their shit don't stink an' their kids won't bleed
Their kids won't bleed in their dam' little war
we can't make it here anymore

Edited on Mon May-01-06 06:57 AM by Leopolds Ghost
"OH" -- Fugazi (2001)

number one in acquisitions now there is no foreign soil go global
like a round thing go global like a hole to every money matchmaker
splicing green as fast as you can
let's break it down and start again

memo to the partners i'm changing all the locks i'm
pissing on your modems i'm shredding all the stock
choose a color for your ceiling
i'm waiting for the bottom to drop in a room so brightly lit
i can't see in (no, no, no)

you would never say you were out of time

(your secret's out)

coming with the fiction all the time

(your secret's out)

but there's a call coming on the other line your secret's out

(it's out, it's out yea)

la-la-lapse of luxury lapping waste cruising towards a bruising crash thread held anvil's going to break
when the letter returns to the sender i can't hardly wait
god this room's so brightly lit...i can't see shit
(no, no, no) (refrain)

thank you sir may i have another? i will be your eager
driver your service provider your maitre'd thank you sir
may i have another please?

"FULL DISCLOSURE" -- Fugazi (2001)

i want out
i want (1000x) a mutually assured destructive
life seizing separate culture to take me over
moving silent like radar
take me over and blow out my mind
full disclosure coming sponsored by no one
take me over and blow out my mind ejected

"FIVE CORPORATIONS" -- Fugazi

Moves so slowly Grows so smoothly Takes so neatly
It's as if
they belong
and they've been here all along

Grows so smoothly Moves so slowly Takes completely
It's as if
they belong
and they've been here all along

This one's ours let's take another
Check the math here check in ten years

Clusterfuck theory!
buy them up and shut em down
Then repeat in every town

Every town will be the same
This one's ours let's take another
Five corporations there is a pattern
