How Many DU'ers Are Vets?
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 11:38 PM by Brigid
I did four years in the Marine Corps, from 1980-1984. It was peacetime (well, except for the bombing of the barracks in Beirut in 1983). I did boot camp at Parris Island, SC, spent a year on Okinawa, and spent the rest of my time at Camp Lejeune, NC. I did battalion admin work. I also spent a few years in the reserves. I was in the Indiana Air National Guard during Desert Storm. I was stateside at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio at that time. No big deal, but I'll bet it's more than most freepers have done. And I'll bet that there are plenty of DUers with far more impressive service than mine. Tell us about your service here!

'76 to '79 Corps of Engineers, Nurnburg. Makes me sick to think that a gang of chicken hawks are putting our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters in harms way. Maybe they can reconvene the war crime trials at Nurnburg. One can hope.

24. The USS Missouri is such an awesome looking ship. I love the
look of those battleships.

I was on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower when Saddam invaded Kuwait. We parked ourselves in the Red Sea for about a month waiting for a carrier to come and take our place. (We were at the end of a Med Cruise.)

Sent a year in tech school at Lowry AFB in Denver, 5 years at Plattsburgh AFB, NY, 3 at Sembach, Germany, and 3 in Laurel, MD, on assignment to the Department of Defense at Fort Meade, MD (that's the way we were supposed to give it then - we weren't supposed to come right out and say NSA unless specifically asked).

Got out before that bastard Reagan got us into another shooting situation.

59. I enlisted in the NYS Army National Guard at the age of 17
in 1990 (actually spent my 17th birthday getting my Army physical. I was a high school Junior). Boot camp in Fort Dix, New Jersey. I actively drilled for the following year until graduating from high school in 1991. At that point I got it in my head that I wanted to be in the Navy as EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal). With the help of a Navy recruiter, I was released from my Army obligation and joined the Navy (Boot Camp Great Lakes Illinois). The EOD didn't work out for me so I ended up a Gunners Mate. "A" school and "C" school (MK 45) in Great Lakes also. Part of commissioning crew for the USS Lake Erie out of Bath, Maine then homported to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Deployed to Persian Gulf and Red Sea December '94 to May '95. Left active duty service July, 1995 as a 2nd Class Gunners Mate.

You're so right -- it's a lot more than most screaming faux-patriots have done! Thanks for this thread, it's great to see all the vets that are here at DU.

So my story is -- worked as an Aerospace Ground Equipment mechanic (now known simply as a Field Equipment Mechanic, and even more simply known then as a flight line grease monkey).

Boot camp at Lackland, training in Chanute, Illinois, then assigned to work on ground support equipment for E-3A's, F-4's and F-15's. Stationed at Tinker in Oklahoma, the now-defunct Clark AB in the Phillipines, Saudi Arabia, and Hoffman in New Mexico. Was usually the only woman in my "shop" -- made for some interesting moments. :)

69. US Army, 82-85 - Dugway Proving Grounds, join the Army, see the
world was the recruiting slogan at the time! My father, uncle, grandfathers, younger & older brothers are all veterans - about half of them retired, the other half were like me - too free spirited to make a career of it.

79. USAF 1961-1965. Four yrs and two monthe service. 2 honorable discharges

A couple of us at Fla State joined the Marine reserves in Tallahassee. Two months later I joined the Air Force. They had to discharge me from the Marines in order to induct me into the Air Force. So I got two Honorable Discharges for two months and four years service. I have never claimed to be a Marine, tho, because I never went thru PI. Always seemed a bit dishonest.

I did offer to re-enlist is they made me Brigadeer for my second enlistment. Didn't seem to attract many who would agree so I wound up a twenty year man (my way). Four in and sixteen out.

Still, as some have already said - an experience I would not have missed for the world. I believe every eighteen year old should have the disciipline of military life for a couple of years. As long as Bush and Co. don't have us in a shooting war somewhere in the world.

My husband is currently active.

I don't know if spouses count, but I've given 9 years of my life to whims of where the Military needed us, as have other military families.

II, and also on the Beach at Normandy, as well as my grandfather, and uncles; my brother was a Marine in the Viet Nam war and was in the Siege of Khe Sanh in Viet Nam, an extremely scary time for the families of our soldiers in the Viet Nam war! Thank G_d, he survived!
