GAY SUSHI LOVERS may want to think twice before picking up their chopsticks, as they could be indirectly supporting a controversial Christian group led by an outspoken anti-gay leader.

New Jersey-based True World Foods, with 21 North American branches, provides sushi-grade seafood products to 6,000 U.S. restaurants, according to its website, making it one of the largest sushi providers in the country.

But the website provides little information about the origins of the company and its link to religious leader and outspoken gay rights opponent Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who founded the Unification Church and whose followers are often called "Moonies."

Moon and his Unification Church own the Washington Times, a conservative publication that regularly publishes news articles with an anti-gay bias, including the use of quotation marks around the word "marriage" when applied to gay couples, even in places like Massachusetts where it is state-sanctioned.

In a June 2004 speech reported in the newspaper, Moon said gay people would be "eliminated."

1. It's amazing how much Moon owns, isn't it?
And at the behest of the rightwing "Christian" zealots of the republican party...

3. You can't totally escape guys like Moon even if you try.
Gotta just accept that people with divergent beliefs live in the world and wish they'd do the same. It's not the sushi's fault.

5. What can you do?
It's not only sushi, the majority of the food we buy probably is indirectly tied to causes we might not like. All of us have probably indirected right-wing causes.

6. What we can do
Awareness is always the first step to solving any problem.

Maybe we can't get around indirectly supporting causes we don't like, but by knowing we're supporting those causes is the first step.

From there, we figure out the next steps to take. It's not an all or nothing proposition here: we do like the Republicans and work towards a goal that could take many years.

We can start by replacing one by one the products where we can find a replacement for, and then for the others, we can start letter writing campaigns, boycotts, and awareness programs.

Think about McDonald's: after the Supersize Me movie came out, they got rid of Supersize meals and were forced to rethink their menu and made changes. This is just one example.

There is the BuyBlue website which is cool, and other folks out there are working towards sustainability such as Woody Harrelson's Voice Yourself site (which is going to have some new changes being made to it and I'll be interested to see what they come up with).
