My father-in-law said at dinner tonight that "we should bomb Iran."
Before I go any further I just want to mention that he is very, very "Pro Israel". If a politician is good to Israel, that is what really matters to him.

He went on to say, "Iran should not be able to produce nuclear weapons. We have to bomb them and do it now."

My head felt like it was going to explode. I said, "Hasn't Bush done enough killing? What do you think will happen in the Middle East if we bomb Iran? Will we be seen as liberators? Who is going to fight this little war you are talking about?".

He says, "It won't be a war. We'll bomb them for a few days and that will be it."

I replied, "Larry, every time a suicide bomber blows up a bus in Israel you go into a funk for three or four days. If we bomb Iran, there will be suicide bombers coming out of the wood work. This is absolutely crazy what you are saying."

I know that the motivation behind what he says is due to Israel and threats against them, but I am sick of this shit. My father-in-law is not a freeper; he is a lifelong democrat. I finally said to him, "You know Larry, what's good for Israel is not always good for the US. Why don't you think about what might happen to our country and our soldiers if we bomb Iran. The Middle East will go up in flames and there will be a shit storm like we never dreamed of."

I then asked him, "Larry, suppose your neighbor down the street has a shotgun and he keeps telling everyone in the neighborhood that he is going to shoot you. Would you get a gun and arm yourself? Bush has been talking about nuking Iran for weeks -- why shouldn't they be allowed to defend themselves?"

He said that "Iran will attack the US and our allies (Israel) if they get nuclear weapons."

I said, "So are we now the 'nuclear police'? We can just go around invading countries or bombing the shit out of them if we feel like it because they might get nuclear weapons? Does that sound like a great foreign policy to you?"

I was so fucking pissed that I had to get up and leave the room.

He tried to engage me again in the conversation and I told him I said all I had to say, that I didn't want to discuss it further. I am sick and tired of this bullshit war rhetoric.

Fuck George Bush

2. I have a friend, allegedly a democrat
who recently told me she thinks the US should just "nuke the hell out of the Middle East once and for all".

It's darn the way some people think this sort of action is the solution. Don't like some countries policies? Bomb the hell out of them!

I just don't think that "the button" will make life any easier on this planet, especially not for us.

3. You need to do an "intervention" and hide or destroy all the AM radios...
...in the house.

And if you have Cable TV with Fox "news," call the Cable company and Cancel that sucker.

Tell him that you don't believe he should have the choice to listen to AM and watch Fox, because it's sinful.

It's for his own good.

5. His statement that:
"Iran will attack the US and our allies (Israel) if they get nuclear weapons."
isn't realistic. There are so many reasons why, but the most important one is that Israel has over 200 nuclear warheads and the guidance technology to use them. Iran is decades behind the curve. If Iran tried to attack either Israel or the U.S.--which is doubtful--then that country would get turned into a parking lot.

I also sympathize with your frustration. My sister's hubby and my father can't shut their traps about this kind of stuff either. :eyes:

6. My question for him: After the way Bush lied us into attacking Iraq...
... WHY do you think he's telling the truth about Iran?????

I don't blame you at all for walking away from this conversation with you father-in-law. In the interests of family harmony, sometimes you just have to.

7. Tell him Cheney would never let it happen

You know all those business ties Cheney/Halliburton had with Iraq via European subsidiaries?

Via European partners and subsidiaries, US corporations have 1000 times as many ties with Iran. Every US banker and insurer has assets in Iran. Hospitals, shopping malls, airports, office buildings, apartment buildings.

Take a look at these pictures.

We'd be bombing Wall Street. It won't happen. Not even the nuke sites. We're tied to those too.

Sorry about this.

I'm still trying to figure out, if Israel has nukes of its own WHY it's up to us to play nanny in this situation.

Israel is a big kid; let it take care of itself once in awhile. We do NOT have to get involved everytime there is a conflict. That's half the reason we are hated as much as we are.

My aunt and uncle are stupid too. They voted for Bush because he's a "Christian." My mom's brother is the biggest racist asshole I've ever met. And I was raised around that environment, so I was raised saying the N word. I hate them for that-- trying to make me a little racist. Now WHY is this Christian thing so important? Ronnie, you are the LEAST Christian person I've ever met.

Even my wonderful hubby reprehensor, who is the most mellow, laidback guy in the world, is like, "Ronnie is an asshole." So I'm not the only one.

9. Does he buy (did he ever or does he still) the bushco lies per WMDs
in Iraq? And if he is skeptical of that - does he even have an ounce of skepticism of round two of the same old show?

Also - why did MAD (mutually assured destruction) work to prevent a nuke being used between the US and the USSR for all of the years of the Cold War, and why does he think that this wouldn't happen now?

10. Stupid people who want the US to bomb Iran...
have no clue about the consequences of that action. I don't believe that it would be worth a minute of my time to reply to their statement. I would say nothing. I would look at them with a blank stare.

14. At first he thought the war in Iraq was justified -- he has since
changed his mind.

I did ask him how he could believe this administration after the shit they pulled with Iraq...I don't believe he answered the question.

11. Stan Goff has an excellent piece at Huffington Post
He hits dead center, IMO.

Full story:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stan-goff/get-real-on-iran_b_20106.html

If they DID drop a nuke on Iran, and if we didn’t immediately start an open revolt that shut the whole f**king country down, we would deserve everything we get right until the next Zhukov walked his artillery across our own Berlin. We need to be telling them that. Drop a nuke, and we break things. I’ll go on the record right here and right now... modeling it for you... George W. Bush, if your administration drops a nuclear weapon on anyone anywhere, you need to lock me up before you do it. Because at that point, anything except open rebellion against you makes me no better than all the “good Germans.” I will not be your good German.

=snip=

Second point... Iran’s nukes. This is also a public education responsibility for us, and the media needs to be our first target. Every time those nimrods even suggest that Iran has nukes, is close to getting nukes, or talks about an Iranian nuke-you-ler program without noting boldly that Iran is not within a blue million miles of having a nuclear weapon, then we need to bust them.

We have to say, loudly and clearly and often, this is just another bullshit story. Not, “Omigod, those mean men are going to nuke Iran!” but -- with some authority -- “Stop that g**damn lying!”

Then get back to the business of stopping the real war.

13. People are being so bamboozled
"With respect to what's coming on Iran, what is in order is a little honesty, just as was the case with the Social Security debate a year ago. The only crisis with Iran is the crisis with the president's public approval ratings. Period. End of story. The Iranians are years, probably as long as a decade away, and possibly even longer from creating even a limited yield nuclear weapon. Ergo, the only reason to ramp up a confrontation now is to help the president's poll numbers."

Just read that at Talking Points Memo.
