The news from Darfur is increasingly grim. The latest peace deal fell apart yesterday, and the deadline has been extended for 48 hours. The U.N. is cutting food aid in half due to lack of funds. Around 6 million people in the region require food aid.
I thought we could use this thread to compile resources and brainstorm about what we can do. The first thought I had, was that we could pick a day to deluge our lawmakers with email or faxes demanding that they take action. Maybe that's already happened or its planned (though I haven't seen anything indicating such). In any case, any ideas or resources would be much appreciated. I know there are people on DU who know far more than I do.
I've posted some resources below. savedarfur.org has a postcard on their site, to bush, demanding that the admin do more to alleviate the suffering.
Thanks.
http://www.savedarfur.org/homeThe Save Darfur Coalition is an alliance of over 100 faith-based, humanitarian and human rights organizations. Our mission is to raise public awareness and to mobilize an effective unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of two million people in the Darfur region.
The Coalition began on July 14 when the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and American Jewish World Service organized a Darfur Emergency Summit at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan featuring Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Elie Wiesel. Mr. Wiesel inspired the group with his impassioned remarks about the suffering being inflicted on Darfurians: "How can I hope to move people from indifference if I remain indifferent to the plight of others? I cannot stand idly by or all my endeavors will be unworthy."
